Add to basketNo binding. Condition: Fair. Puteshestvie iz Peterburga v Moskvu prinyato uslovno nazyvat povestyu, no eto ne tak - v dejstvitelnosti ono predstavlyaet soboj svoeobraznuyu publitsisticheskuyu variatsiyu na temu lyubimogo v kontse XVIII stoletiya zhanra sentimentalnogo puteshestviya - putevykh zametok, skontsentrirovannykh ne stolko na realnykh vpechatleniyakh puteshestvennika, skolko na ego myslyakh i chuvstvakh po povodu uvidennogo. I to, chto dovelos uvidet Radishchevu v gorodakh, derevnyakh i na pochtovykh stantsiyakh, gde pisatel ostanavlivalsya po puti iz Peterburga v Moskvu, prevratilo ego knigu v gnevnuyu i tragicheskuyu otpoved rossijskomu krepostnichestvu vo vsem ego urodstve i zhestokosti.

Hardcover. 0 (illustrator). Forth edition; 6 x 8; pp. [2], 3-239, [1]; vloth-backed pictorial boards; some rubbing to corners; mild uniform age-toning to pages; very good or better.Aleksandr Radishchev (1749-1802) was a Russian social critic and author who was said to have brought radicalism to Russian literature. The first edition of his current book, describing the socio-economic conditions in Russia and criticizing serfdom, was published in 1790 and immediately condemned by Catherine the Great. The Queen ordered the entire printing to be confiscated and destroyed and of the 650 copies 17 survived (they were smuggled to England and reprinted in 1840). For daring to write it, the author was sentenced to death. The sentence was later reversed to exile in Siberia after Radishchev begged forgiveness of Catherine the Great and publicly disowning his book. A second edition was not published until 1905. 2.

Hardcover. Blue cloth board with gilt spine lettering, yellow DJ with black lettering and bw illustration, [xvi] 286 pp.; 2 bw illustrations, a map and photo of the author. From the dust jacket: "Primarily an attack on serfdom and an appeal to the Sovereign and the landed gentry to free the serfs voluntarily, [the book] has been described as a Russian 'Uncle Tom's Cabin.' Published in 1790, the book was banned immediately and the author first sentenced to death, then banished to eastern Siberia. On the order of the Empress Catherine II, who read the 'Journey' very carefully, all copies that could be found were collected and burned. The few that escaped were widely circulated and laboriously copied out by hand, but the book was not freely published in Russia until 1905." This is a reprint of the first English edition of 1958. VG-, clean and tight with very light wear to covers. Clean but with chips to top/bottom of spine and front cover; 3-inch piece missing from upper part of back.
