Por la proa, un periplo de más de 15.000 millas que los llevará hasta Melbourne, tras una escala de más de quince meses en las islas Kerguelen, en donde esperan resarcirse económicamente con la extracción del aceite de las innumerables focas que pueblan el archipiélago. En este fascinante relato, el autor no pasa por alto ningún detalle. Narra las esperanzas de su reducida tripulación, pero también sus dudas y sus problemas. Siempre al tanto de todos, hace a la vez de jefe y confidente. An expedition in 1907 from France to Melbourne on board the J.B. Charcot with a year's stay on the Kerguelen islands for exploration and sealing. In order to finance this expedition, one of the sponsors, the British "Daily Chronicle", bought the story in 1910. (It was only translated into French in 1990).
