Leather. Condition: Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A beautifully illustrated work regarding the natural history, complete with twelve hand coloured maps. Scarce. Collated complete with twelve full page hand coloured maps. The first edition of the work. Ezekiel Blomfield was a congregational minister, author and compiler of religious works and works on natural history. Blomfield was extremely interested in the phenomena of nature, first influenced by reading Evening At Home, a popular series of educational children's books by John Aikin. This final work by Blomfield contains a series of six lectures all relating to topics of 'the 'philosophy of history' which Blomfield describes in this work as relating to the development of humanity and their relationship with the world. In this sense, the work acts as an early work of sociological thought, but with a heavy influence from Blomfield's own religious belief. The work was published posthumously, a year after the death of Blomfield. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally a trifle rubbed with loss to the leather at the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Slight fading to the spine. Marks to the board. Slight loss to the rear board. Hinges strained and may detach with further handling. Ink inscriptions and ink stamp to front free endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with marginal age toning and the odd spot. Offsetting from plates. Evidence of previous repair to title page. Good. book.
