Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. The Natural History of Selborne, to which are added The Naturalists Calendar, miscellaneous observations and poems VOL I ONLY of II written by Rev. Gilbert White and published in 1825 in London. A charming early 19th century edition of Gilbert Whites the Natural History of Selborne (first p…ublished 1789), a seminal work in English natural history beloved by collectors and readers for two centuries. This copy is in good condition and shows gentle signs of age, including slight bumping to the boards and minor foxing consistent with its period, yet the interior remains clean and structurally sound and free from writing, tears, marks, or other damage. The frontispiece is a hand colored antique plate, adding visual appeal and historical character. Really amazing condition considering the age of the Volume. The front endpaper bears the ownership inscription of Major Max Teichman Derville, a noted English public figure and local historian of the early to mid 20th century. Major Derville (1876 to 1963) served with distinction in World War I (awarded the O.B.E., Military Division) and later held civic positions including High Sheriff of Kent, Mayor of New Romney for 12 consecutive years, County Councillor and Alderman, and was an acknowledged authority on the history of the Cinque Ports and Romney Marsh. His historical writings (e.g., The Level and Liberty of Romney Marsh) and extensive personal library reflect his lifelong scholarship and service to local heritage. Of value to collectors of early natural history classics and 19th century literature, enthusiasts of Gilbert Whites work and historical ecology, any buyers seeking antique books with distinguished provenance, or libraries and private collections emphasizing English country life and nature writing.
