Nominal rubbing to the hinges and small scratch mark on the upper portion of the front board. A remarkably well preserved copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Westall, Richard and John Martin (illustrator). Bound in leather with raised bands on the spine, accompanied by gilt tooling and title. Majority of the gilt is worn or no longer present. Presentation inscription inside the front cover dated 1863 and partially obscured by a bit of scuffing to the paper. Foxing throughout the book along with scattered pencil scribbling. Rubbing and shelf wear at the extremities. Rubbing to the covers. The tail of the spine is bumped and has a short tear. Evidence of hinge repair, though front and rear hinges are cracked now. Despite this wear, the binding is tight and square. Two volumes bound into one with illustrations by Richard Westall and John Martin and Caunter's accompanying text on the left-facing page. There is no title page or index of illustrations for Volume I, but 45 plates with text are present. As Volume II continues with Plate 48, two plates (46 and 47) are thus missing from Volume I. The illustrations in Volume I begin with The Temptation and end with Death of Moses on Mount Nebo. In volume II, the page with text facing Plate 91, Belshazzar's Feast, is missing. Same for Plate 92 (Daniel in the Lion's Den). The last three plates and accompanying text pages are missing: Plate 94 (The Fall of Nineveh), Plate 95 (The Vision of the Four Chariots), and Plate 96 (The Destroyers of Jerusalem Destroyed). No pagination, but each verso/recto (text/illustration) pair of pages is followed by a blank pair before continuing with the next text/plate pages.

During his artistic career, he travelled extensively around India, painting the people and scenery. A fascinating work regarding the culture of India. Written from the personal accounts of Rev. John Hobart Caunter. Caunter was an English cleric and writer who served as a cadet for the East India Company. He published numerous works relating to India and Biblical studies. 'The Oriental Annual' series concerned the different areas of India and was published in seven volumes. With an advertisement for the work to the front of the book, alongside four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. With the previous owner's neat ink signature to the front free endpaper. In the original full morocco binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Small crack to the upper rear joint. Light marks to the boards. Rear hinge is loosening. Light marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Binders label to the front paste-down. Previous owner's ink signature to the front free endpaper. Internally, binding strained between the frontispiece and engraved title page, but still firm. Pages age-toned to the edges. Spotting to the plates.
