Complete with the twenty-two engravings. John Hobart Caunter (1792 1851) was an English cleric and writer. Tissue guard in front of each engravings. Nominal rubbing to the hinges and small scratch mark on the upper portion of the front board. A remarkably well preserved copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Westall, Richard and John Martin (illustrator). Bound in leather with raised bands on the spine, accompanied by gilt tooling and title. Majority of the gilt is worn or no longer present. Presentation inscription inside the front cover dated 1863 and partially obscured by a bit of scuffing to the paper. Foxing throughout the book along with scattered pencil scribbling. Rubbing and shelf wear at the extremities. Rubbing to the covers. The tail of the spine is bumped and has a short tear. Evidence of hinge repair, though front and rear hinges are cracked now. Despite this wear, the binding is tight and square. Two volumes bound into one with illustrations by Richard Westall and John Martin and Caunter's accompanying text on the left-facing page. There is no title page or index of illustrations for Volume I, but 45 plates with text are present. As Volume II continues with Plate 48, two plates (46 and 47) are thus missing from Volume I. The illustrations in Volume I begin with The Temptation and end with Death of Moses on Mount Nebo. In volume II, the page with text facing Plate 91, Belshazzar's Feast, is missing. Same for Plate 92 (Daniel in the Lion's Den). The last three plates and accompanying text pages are missing: Plate 94 (The Fall of Nineveh), Plate 95 (The Vision of the Four Chariots), and Plate 96 (The Destroyers of Jerusalem Destroyed). No pagination, but each verso/recto (text/illustration) pair of pages is followed by a blank pair before continuing with the next text/plate pages.

The Oriental Annual is the second of a planned three volume set containing descriptions of the three English Presidencies in India. The first covered Madras, this volume describes Calcutta. Ultimately seven volumes by the author with illustrations by Daniell were published. Dedicated to the then-Princess Victoria and her mother, the Duches of Kent. Text is clean, tight and undamaged, no foxing Front hinge cracked but holding. Oriiginal blind -stamped with a pattern of coiled snakes surrounding a gold-stamped imaged of three men riding an elephant, Gold stmped title with palm tree and camel on spine. During his artistic career, he travelled extensively around India, painting the people and scenery. A fascinating work regarding the culture of India. Written from the personal accounts of Rev. John Hobart Caunter. Caunter was an English cleric and writer who served as a cadet for the East India Company. He published numerous works relating to India and Biblical studies. 'The Oriental Annual' series concerned the different areas of India and was published in seven volumes. With an advertisement for the work to the front of the book, alongside four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. With the previous owner's neat ink signature to the front free endpaper. In the original full morocco binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Small crack to the upper rear joint. Light marks to the boards. Rear hinge is loosening. The beautiful plates depict views, sacred and famous buildings and sites, exotic animals including wild beasts fights and tiger hunt, etc. William Daniell travelled in India with his uncle Thomas Daniell for eight years and they produced a number of highly desirable aquatint illustrated works of the country including the renowned "Oriental Scenery" (1794). This volume is included in a series of seven volumes issued between 1834 and 1840.

Contemporary Cosway style binding of full purple grained calf, the boards blocked in gilt with arabesques and corner ornaments, spine gilt in compartments and lettered direct. The upper cover with the watercolour on vellum (?) Arms of the Earl of Thanet heightened with gold within oval frame under glass . The lower cover blocked in gilt with the letter "T". Wide inner gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. In excellent condition. Inscribed by the author to the dedicatee of this work "To the Right Honourable the Earl of Thanet with the Authors' best respects". An uncommon work, only 4 copies cited by Copac.
