The 21 letters cover the period 1737-1765, there are also 9 other related documents inc. a 1763 plan of land in Silkland, 'My Father's Release' (1727), and a breakdown of the £5000 purchase money of Frithelstock Manor (c.1765). Richard Stevens was High Sheriff of Devon in 1737, and an M.P. in the 1760s, the letters are full of interesting side-lights of this wealthy, landed member of the gentry and of his circle. June 30th, 1737 " Being this morning with Mr Down otter hunting, and riding over one of his fields all four of ye horses leggs slid away and fell on my foot." July 29th, 1737 " Mr Chichester of Arlington has got a very good deer near his house . & has desired my dogs to assist him . ." May 19th, 1739 " As we are struggling for Liberty at Plymouth against the Artifices and threats of the Minister and the Admiralty ." May 25th, 1739 " I forbore writing since in hopes to have assu'd you the Distemper has made no progress beyond the Custom House." July 17th, 1739 " War is the word with us as well as in the Country, but surely the Coasting Shipps may have protections from hence if the Masters would apply." March 11th, 1768 " Patty . has rather too great an appetite, complaining of a swelling in her belly . I cant think it proceeds from any criminal cause ."
