The Contributors to these volumes are Rainer Maria Rilke, Randolph Bourne, Theodore Dreiser, Henry David Thoreau, Alfred Stieglitz, Andre Malraux, E. E. Cummings, Franz Kafka, Anais Nin, Charles Olson, Marcel Proust, William Carlos Williams, George Bernard Shaw, Louis Sullivan, Walter Gropius, Roger Baldwin, Muriel Rukeyser, Alvin Foote, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Havelock Ellis, Arthur Schnitzler, Thomas Mann, Ernst Toller, Angna Enters, William Saroyan, Kenneth Patchen, Albert Camus, Alfred Kazin, Sherwood Anderson, Gerturde Stein, Clifford Odetts, David Ignatow, Richard Wright, George Grosz, Henry Miller, Chiang Kai-Shek, Hart Crane, Booker T. Washington, Wright Morris, Albert Einstein, Federico Garcia Lorca, Aaron Copland, Andre Malraux, Jean Paul Satre, Simone De Beauvoir, Gandhi, Leo Tolstoy, Bertold Brecht, Carlo Levi, Stephen Spender and many others. (Twice a Year, edited by Dorothy Norman, a photographer and friend and promoter of Alfred Steiglitz, was a literary magazine with explicit political aims. Norman wrote: "Because we believe that man must be given every possible opportunity whereby he may maintain his necessary dignity and integrity Ð so that he may fulfill himself as responsible individual and as responsible member of society Ð we are printing those expressions, in Literature, in the Arts, and in the fight to safeguard and to achieve Civil Liberties that seem most effectively directed toward such ends." Contributors included most of the noted figures of the mid-20th century avant-garde, including Henry Miller, Ignazio Silone, Franz Kafka, E.E. Cummings, Stephen Spender, Marcel Proust, Anais Nin, Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, André Malraux, William Carlos Williams, and others. The illustrations in the magazine heavily emphasized photography, featuring work by Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, among others. Some of the photographs are original silver prints from negatives, others are photogravures. Each issue also carried reports on civil liberties and artistic freedom in the United States. Hoffman in The Little Magazine said of Twice a Year that it was "within the tradition established by The Seven Arts in its attempt to achieve some synthesis of aesthetic, cultural, and social expression." It was a handsome, important magazine, difficult to find complete). Bookseller Inventory # 12619

Item Description: B. B. Redding, State Printer, [Sacramento CA], 1855. 54, [2] pp. "Register and Descriptive List of Convicts under Sentence": pp. 12 - 35 [beginning with 1851]; "Transcript of Received, Escaped, and Returned Prisoners since the Inspection of State Prison Books": pp, 38 - 40. Last leaf blank. 8vo. 23.5 cm x 14 cm. This an interesting factual account regarding the early days of the prison, an era when it wasn't quite impregnable edifice that now stands; in 1854, 75 of 520 incarcerated individuals had escaped without recapture. This situation caused Governor John Bigler to write: "Gentlemen: Having learned from various reliable sources that quite a number of escapes have recently occurred from the State Prison, which, to some extent is in your charge, I deem it my duty respectfully to invite your attention to the section of the law regulating your duties. These escapes, permit me here to remark, give great force to allegations, daily and publicly made, that the prison building is insecure, and that its management is not such as to fully accomplish the object of its erection, in prevention and punishment of crime." However, since the place is still going strong, one can be reasonably confident the governor's concerns were addressed. Rare; Not in Cowan, Greenwood nor Rocq. Not in the LoC on-line catalogue. OCLC & Melvyl record but one copy [UCSB] & no copies have been at auction these last 25+ years. No other copies currently offered via the on-line matching services. Overall VG+ (a faint qtr-circle stain to upper left of text paper/'San Quentin / -- 1855 --" written diagonally to lower half of front wrapper). Ex-lib, with 2 small stamps to t.p. & a lightly penciled purchase annotation in the gutter after the 1st leaf [10 Nov 61 JR $10.00]. Bound in later blue-grey paper wrappers 1st edition. Not in Cowan, nor Greenwood. Bookseller Inventory # 20582
