This postcard shows a battle reenactment on the Custer Battlefield National Monument in Montana. "Roahen Photo's - Billings, Montana" is printed on the back. This photograph was taken by Kenneth F. Roahen (1888-1976). Roahen led an accomplished life as a photographer, naturalist, and game warden for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Biological Survey. As a game warden, Roahen became known for his work investigating market hunters and had several encounters that endangered his life. Some of the market hunters were tied to organized crime in Chicago and Al Capone. Roahen was transferred to Billings, Montana in 1930. In Billings, Roahen also became the president and director of the Custer Battlefield Historical Museum. As a photographer, Roahen began with wildlife as his main subjects but eventually created a portfolio dedicated to the Custer Battlefield National Monument. In 1954, Roahen retired from his position as game warden but continued his work as a photographer.
