Add to basketFirst edition, rare in commerce; a collection of three early modern Persian treatises on geography, edited and translated into English using manuscripts owned by the famous Anglo-Irish orientalist Sir William Ouseley (d. 1842). Two of these treatises are by Sadiq Isfahani (d. c.1650). The third treatise is an anonymous eighteent…h-century Persian bibliography of premodern Arabic and Persian works on world history. Although he traced his origins to the city of Isfahan in Iran, Sadiq Isfahani was a prominent author and official in India during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. He lived in Bengal in the 1630s, where he interacted with local celebrities and literary figures. The volume includes Sadiq's works Tahqiq al-i rab (The Determination of Pronunciation) and Taqvim al-buldan (The Geography of Countries). Tahqiq al-i rab vowels the names of cities, regions, and countries to aid correct pronunciation and provides brief glosses on cultural history. Remarkably, Sadiq includes the place name yeni dünya ('New World' in Turkish) and writes of the discovery of the Americas by Europeans. It would seem likely, therefore, that he was aware of contemporary events happening outside the Islamic world thanks to Ottoman sources. Also a fascinating work, Taqvim al-buldan lists the longitude and latitude of about 700 places. This is a conspicuously attractive subscriber's copy, with the pencilled pressmark of the marquess of Londonderry appearing on the subscriber's leaf before the title. Charles William Vane (formerly Stewart), third marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854), took the surname Vane on marrying Frances Anne Emily Vane-Tempest in 1819. A brave but not particularly brilliant soldier - Sir John Moore described him as "a very silly fellow" - Vane served with variable distinction throughout the Peninsular War. His Narrative of the War (1828), based on his correspondence with his half-brother Lord Castlereagh, was not uncontroversial. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. The Oriental Translation Fund was established in 1828 to make texts from Asia accessible in English, and enjoyed support from many royal and aristocratic backers. While the fund published some classic works, such as the Travels of Ibn Battuta and the Memoirs of the Emperor Jahangir, it also sponsored translations of less famous texts, including an early cookbook, Indian Cookery, as Practised and Described by the Natives of the East. Tall octavo (247 x 160 mm). Delicately engraved emblem of the Oriental Translation Fund to title page; subscriber's leaf printed in purple. Text in English and Persian. Contemporary green half calf, smooth spine divided by gilt scrolling foliate rolls, compartments filled with blind quatrefoils, dark red label, sides and corners trimmed with a blind foliate roll, Shell pattern marbled sides, grey brown surface-paper endpapers, sanguine speckled edges. Spine lightly sunned, slight foxing to prelims. A superior copy.
