Spesso, quando studiava un luogo per la prima volta, in lui l'artista predominava sul "giardiniere" - come amava egli stesso definirsi - per carpirne il vero carattere, il genius loci. Dopo gli esordi in Inghilterra, Russell Page lavorò in tutto il mondo, affrontando realtà e climi molto diversi tra loro: oltre a Parigi e alla Normandia, si trovò a progettare giardini dal Belgio alla Svizzera, dalla Francia meridionale all'Italia e alla Spagna. La fama rapidamente conquistata lo portò anche verso altre latitudini, in Medio Oriente, in India e nelle Americhe. Il contributo di Page era richiesto da una clientela ricca e raffinata, talvolta capricciosa, con la quale sapeva tuttavia entrare in sintonia per coglierne le esigenze e rispettarne le passioni. Viste ampie, distese d'acqua, siepi e spazi delimitati, sentieri e gradini, ma anche grandi prati, giardini di rose o di fiori diversamente abbinati a creare una variopinta rassegna di colori: è difficile definire uno stile nel suo lavoro.
