Khirbet et-Tannur is a Nabataean site dating from the second century B.C. to the fourth to sixth centuries A.D. located on a hilltop above the Wadi el-Hasa near Khirbet edh-Dharih, 70 km north of Petra along the King's Highway. In 1937, Nelson Glueck excavated Khirbet et-Tannur on behalf of the American Schools of Oriental Research and the Department of Antiquities of Transjordan, but died before completing a final report. Now, in two extensively illustrated volumes, the results of Glueck's excavations are finally published, based on previously unstudied excavation records and archaeological materials in the ASOR Nelson Glueck Archive at the Semitic Museum, Harvard University. Volume 1 is devoted to the architecture of the temple, the dating of its successive phases, its sculptural decoration and iconography,and to a discussion of Nabataean religion, including the evidence for its connections with the religion of Iron Age Edom and its continuation at the temple of Khirbet et-Tannur well into the Christian era, before the A.D. 363 earthquake brought an end to the site. The volume closes with observations about iconoclasm at Khirbet et-Tannur, Khirbet edh-Dharih and Petra. Annual of ASOR 67.

Doch hat die Insel noch weit mehr zu bieten, denn schon über zwölf Jahrhunderte vor dem bayerischen Monarchen wussten Mönchen die geschützte Insellage für die Gründung eines Klosters zu nutzen. Das ehemalige Augustiner-Chorherrenstift war bis in die Gegenwart herein Schauplatz bayerischer und deutscher Geschichte, tagte hier doch 1948 der Verfassungskonvent zur Beratung der künftigen deutschen Bundesverfassung und des Grundgesetzes. Zuvor hatte sich unter dem Krummstab der Klosteräbte und Stiftspröpste ein reiches Kulturleben entfaltet. Nach der Säkularisation entdeckten die Maler die grandiose Chiemseeregion und gleichzeitig die Inseln im »bayerischen Meer«. Diesen »zweiten« Entdeckern der so wunderbaren Landschaft sind zwei Gemäldegalerien im ehemaligen Stift gewidmet. Allerdings sollte es sich der Besucher nicht entgehen lassen, die Naturschönheiten der Insel selbst in Augenschein zu nehmen. Über das von Menschenhand gestaltete Gartenparterre vor dem Schloss hinaus kann man den naturnahen weitläufigen Inselpark erwandern, wo sich immer wieder Aussichten über den See und aufs Gebirge hin auftun. Auch die Fraueninsel gerät dabei ins Blickfeld, Ausgangspunkt einer der ältesten Künstlerkolonien Europas. All diese Aspekte eröffnen sich dem Leser dieses Buches in außerordentlich informativen Texten. Elmar D. Schmid und Kerstin Knirr haben sich der Geschichte des Klosters und der Chiemseemalerei angenommen, während Alexander Rauch sich mit König Ludwig II. von Bayern und seinem prächtigen Schloss befasst. Doch kommt auch die Schaulust nicht zur kurz: Über 200 Farbabbildungen - darunter interessante alte Stiche, idyllische Landschaftsgemälde, hervorragende Architekturfotografien und spektakuläre Naturaufnahmen - nehmen den Betrachter mit auf einen geführten »Rundgang«. Dabei wissen die Autoren das Augenmerk auf bemerkenswerte Details zu lenken. Bei der »Besichtigung« des Königsschlosses etwa entwickelt sich auf diese Weise ein Verständnis für das erstaunliche Ausstattungsprogramm Ludwigs II., das zugleich einen Einblick in das Seelenleben dieses unglücklichen Königs gewährt.
