Jacket has light soiling and tattering, spine has light chipping, binding sound, inside cover has an ownership plate, internally clean. Every year, the Hernando De Soto Historical Society reenacts the first landing by a European on the shores of what is now Manatee County. It was here, some say, that Hernando De Soto came ashore in 1539 to begin his remarkable trek through much of the southern United States. Others feel that Ponce de Leon beat him to it by a few years. Regardless of who the "first" visitor was, neither left a permanent settlement. Yesterday's Bradenton is more concerned with the folks who came and remained here, who carved a great county out of the mangroves and pines. We will meet briefly the Gates family, the first permanent residents in Manatee County; Dr. Joseph Braden's castle; Robert Gamble's sugar fields; and others. But mostly we'll see Bradenton and other county communities as they grew up. We'll see the familiar places in more recent times?recent in years, but ancient in appearance. Yesterday's Bradenton will bring back pleasant memories for the oldtimers, and will amaze the newcomers. Here, along with a brief history, are hundreds of authentic historical photographs, the result of several years of searching for the pictorial records of the community, many of which came to light for the first time in many years. They pre-sent a fascinating, nostalgic insight to the people who settled this well-loved area. Signed by Author.
