Condition: Trade paperback, New, Anastasia Damianakos (illustrator). New York: Hippocampus Press:, 2003. Trade paperback, New, 288 pp. Cover artwork by: Anastasia Damianakos Lovecraft wrote of Gilpin: "He is intellectually exactly like me save in degree. In degree he is immensely my superior - he is what I should like to be but have not the brains enough to be." 27 of Lovecraft's letters to Galpin survive and are printed here. They cover a period of more than twenty years and touch on amateur journalism, socialism, Lovecraft's dreams, his early stories and more. Edited and annotated by Joshi and Schultz, this hefty volume should help to shed some light on a side of Lovecraft previously unexamined.

In 1924 Wandrei came in touch with his literary idol, Clark Ashton Smith, and two years later Smith referred him to Lovecraft. There began a rich, expansive communication in which both sides of the correspondence are preserved largely intact, allowing for an unprecedented glimpse into the life and beliefs of the two authors. Wandrei began as a fiery, cosmic poet in the tradition of Smith, but later took to writing weird fiction. He persuaded Farnsworth Wright of Weird Tales to accept Lovecraft's seminal tale 'The Call of Cthulhu,' just as Lovecraft urged Wright to take Wandrei's 'The Red Brain.' Lovecraft introduced Wandrei to his fellow Midwesterner August Derleth, and after Lovecraft's death they founded Arkham House to publish the work of Lovecraft and other writers of weird fiction. Lovecraft came to believe that Donald Wandrei's brother Howard was a weird artist of the first order, and this volume features the letters and postcards they exchanged in the 1930s. Another late colleague, Emil Petaja, was of Finnish ancestry, and Lovecraft's letters to him are full of discussions into the fantasy fandom of that era along with his later beliefs on politics, society, and religion. As with other volumes of the Letters of H. P. Lovecraft series, this book prints all surviving letters unabridged and with exhaustive annotations by S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz.".

Moe, who knew Lovecraft for nearly the entirety of the latter's adult life, from 1914 to 1937. Moe, a high school teacher in Wisconsin, was a devoted amateur journalist and also a fervent and evangelical Christian, and both subjects elicited sharp discussions from Lovecraft. The Providence writer's years-long assistance on Moe's book about the appreciation of poetry, Doorways to Poetry, may have helped inspire his later weird verse, including the Fungi from Yuggoth sonnets. The volume also contains Lovecraft's extensive correspondence with Bernard Austin Dwyer, a weird fiction fan who engaged in wide-ranging discussions with Lovecraft on such subjects as cosmicism, Lovecraft's upbringing, and political developments in the 1920s and 1930s. In addition, the relatively few surviving letters that Lovecraft wrote to the poet Samuel Loveman, as well as a year-long correspondence with the noted bookman Vincent Starrett, are included here.".
