Verstärkt wird die Wirkung dieses "Handbuchs der deutschen Reichsgeschichte" (Nachrede) durch die kongenialen Illustrationen Martin Distelis, des einzigen Malers im deutschen Sprachgebiet in der 1. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, der sich als herausragender Politiker erwies. "Ganz in die Politik griff Disteli in den 6 Bildern zu der amüsanten Satire 'Geschichte vom deutschen Michel', in denen er die politische Bevormundung der Deutschen ebenso scharf wie lustig geißelt" (A. Rümann). Diesen Illustrationen läßt Schulz amüsantironische "authentische Interpretationen" folgen. Zum Erscheinen der Schrift schreibt Ruge an Fröbel: "Es freut mich vornehmlich, daß Sie etwas von Disteli gebracht haben. Er übertrifft doch alles, was in der Art sonst existiert". Schulz (1797-1860) mußte aufgrund seiner publizistischen Tätigkeit aus Deutschland fliehen und ging, wie viele, in die Schweiz. Seine "Broschüre erregte in den Schweizer Blättern eine starke Polemik; jeder lehnte die Autorschaft ab" (Glossy II, 44). - Keller 186; Rümann 338.
