Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. NICE LOOKING BROWN BOOK, GREEN DESIGN FRONT AND SPINE, BROWN PRINT. FORMER OWNERS NAME IN THE FRONT. CHOSEN AND ARRANGED BY HANSON HART WEBSTER; AND FANNY E. COE, TEACHER OF ENGLISH IN THE BOSTON NORMAL SCHOOL. WITH AN INTRODUCTION TO THE AUTHOR BY J.G. LOCKHART, DR. JOHN BROWN AND WASHINGTON IRVING. TIGHT AND CLEAN FILLED WITH WONDERFUL WRITINGS AND ARTWORK. Scott, Sir Walter (1771¿1832), novelist, poet, and essayist of the romantic period, concerned with Scottish Border legends and traditions throughout his lifetime. His Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802¿3) was a collection of folk and literary ballads in three volumes and contained his important early essay ¿The Fairies of Popular Superstition¿. While the elfin people play a role in his poetry, notably in ¿The Lay of the Last Minstrel¿, they and their lore are featured even more prominently in his novels. The Monastery (1820) discusses the nature of elemental spirits and presents a fairy¿sylph in the form of the White Lady of Avenel. A fairy changeling appears in Peveril of the Peak (1822), and a Rumpelstiltskin¿like supernatural dwarf in The Pirate (1822). Discussions of fairy lore permeate other novels. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. ROAD TO ALASKA BY DOUGLAS COE W/ 50 PICTURES BY W. SCOTT HOSKINS 1943 1ST. Staying with Alaska (The Last Frontier as they call it and somewhere I visit regularly because two of my sons live there) I am pleased to offer: Road to Alaska- The Story of the Alaska Highway with text by Douglas Coe and pictures by Winfield Scott Hoskins. This small hard cover book (5 ¾ x 8 ½ inches, 176 pages) was published by Julian Messner Inc of New York dated 1943, with no other mention of edition. The book is bound in burnt orange boards with black titles on cover and spine. It is very well illustrated with 50 pictures throughout the text by the Artist and 6 maps related to the building of the road. The endpapers are also nicely decorated. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers have some marking across the front cover which I imagined were part of a missing decoration but now believe are stains. The hard covers are lightly bumped and the spine a bit darkened. Inside a former owner has left his neat bookplate on the front endpaper but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages and pictures are clean and bright throughout without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
