Original red cloth with gilt lettering front cover and spine, TEG. The book has some dark spotting on spine, big faded area lower front cover likely where label removed, rubbing spine ends, 3cm split/tear spine cloth top rear spine crease, some EP foxing and foxing to first few pages but nearly all pages have no foxing, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, gatherings a little loose or cracked in several places (usual for this book that had brittle gluing of the internal backstrip) but binding is solid and not in danger of breaking from use. A good working example or good example for rebinding. The book measures 226mm tall x 143mm, and has 335 pages, 30 b/w photo plates including 4 by Vittorio Sella. Descriptions of LNN's many climbs in the Alps from his manuscripts for a book he was preparing to publish before his untimely death. Published posthumously, this book was edited by Ludwig's wife, May, who was with him on the climb where he perished and she gives the full account here of the climb and accident in the opening chapter. LNN was one of the best climbers of his era. He died in a fall witnessed by his wife on the Funffingerspitze. He had climbed extensively in the Alps, frequently on a rope with his wife. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Weighted with heavy, nineteenth-century camera equipment, Vittorio Sella climbed some of the world's most mysterious, perilous peaks and photographed them, many for the first time. His strikingly elegant photographs, which in Ansel Adams's words, "revealed [the mountains] in all their sheer majesty," offer groundbreaking scientific and documentary information as well. Climbers today still use Sella's pictures to map out routes and to better comprehend their challenges and the magnificence to come.Through Sella's images, we can witness the grandeur of the world's greatest peaks; the Russian Caucasus, the Saint Elias Range in Alaska, Mount Ruwenzori in Africa, the Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas. His photographic documentation of these peaks had no precedents and has few, if any, equals.Greg Child is a mountaineer and author of Thin Air (Dell, 1993). Wendy Watson is curator of exhibitions at Mount Holyoke College. Paul Kallmes, a renowned member of the American Alpine Club, has worked closely with the Fondazione Sella for several years.
