Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), top edge red, gilt letters, xiii + 157 pp. Fine in a Very Good dust jacket with edgewear. From dust jacket: A timely and unique book, giving the first Indian response to Rudyard Kipling's writings and his view of the Anglo-Indian world. In 1886, with the publication of Departmental Ditties, the English reaidng public became aware of a new poet's voice that over the years would extol the lives of the men and women who served the British Empire so well during her rule of India. Two years later, 18?8, Plain Tales from the Hills introduced readers to an exciting new storyteller who skillfully transported his audience into the heat, color and ennui of that exotic land, as well as into the lives and mores of the Anglo-Indians. In a brief biographical discussion of Kipling's background and childhood, Professor Shahane points up the influences that colored the author's imagination and pervaded his mature writings. This is followed by a full examination of the intellectual atmosphere of the late-Victorian age and its writers, who helped shape Kipling's mode of expression. Professor Shahne considers Kim (1901) the profoundest expression of Kipling's talents. In the first comprehensive and concentrated study to be made of this novel, he presents the complex narrative sequence in outline to demonstrate the hero's quest for selfhood. As Kipling, an intellectual activist, in the process of realizing himself creatively was transformed into an artist, so too is young Kim transformed through his experiences and adventures during the transition from Being to Becoming. Kipling's minor fiction, such as Captains Courageous and the partly autobiographical The Light That Failed, as well as his major short stories, are critically analyzed and evaluated against the late nineteenth-century background. Kplling's wide range of experience and his extraordinary knowledge of science and art, men and matters imbues his fiction with a powerful sense of verisimilitude. Professor Shahane interprets some of Kipling's well-known poems in the context of his activism. He considers the ballads musical and says Kipling is not an "echo-poet, borrowing his rhythms from operas; nor is he merely a jingle-poet, but rather an excellent composer of verse, and Professor Shahane expands these points in his discussion of Kipling's works in the genre.
