Xtreme Houses präsentiert 45 Hausformen, Behausungen und bewegliche Architekturen, die aus der Rolle fallen. In englischsprachigen Texten beschreiben die Autoren mit zahlreichen Farbfotografien, Visualisierungen und Skizzen Häuser zum Selberbauen, Domizile zum Aufblasen oder Appartements zum Aufklappen. Die vorgestellten Projekte haben zum Teil sehr ungewöhnliche Formen. Sowohl das im spanischen Asturien auf Stelzen stehende silberfarbene "Schlafhaus" der Architekten Köppel & Martinez als auch das "Stahlhaus" des US-Amerikaners Robert Bruno erinnern an unbekannte Flugobjekte aus einem Science-Fiction-Film. Das kreisrunde "Aquasphere" des Franzosen Jean-Michel Ducanelle wirkt hingegen wie ein gewassertes Raumschiff. Die rundum verlaufenden Fenster der Wohninsel gestatten einen großzügigen Panoramablick auf das Meer und auch die Unterwasserwelt lässt sich durch eine Scheibe im Boden beobachten. In Xtreme Houses werden neben extravaganten Wohnmöglichkeiten auch Visionen aufgezeigt, die sozialen, ökonomischen und ökologischen Ansprüchen gerecht werden. So begegnet der New Yorker Künstler Michael Rakowitz dem Problem der Obdachlosigkeit mit einem aufblasbaren Zelt, das als "Parasit" über die Außenventilationssysteme von Wohnhäusern mit Luft aufgerichtet und beheizt wird. Möglichen Erdbebengefahren begegnet der Tokyoter Shigeru Ban mit einem besonders leichten Baustoff: recyceltem Papier. Damit gelingen dem Architekten immer wieder wunderschöne filigrane Bauwerke, wie der japanische Pavillon auf der Expo 2000 in Hannover.
