Originally published in Russian in the literary magazine Novy Mir in 1962 as (romanizized) Odin den' Ivana Denisovicha, this edition was translated by Ralph Parker, with an Introduction by Marvin L. Kalb and a Foreword by Alexander Tvardovsky. The novel is set in a labor camp in the early 1950s during the Stalinist Era. The labor camp featured in the book was one at which Solzhenitsyn had served some time, and was located in Karaganda in northern Kazakhstan. The book was the basis for the 1970 film of the same name starring Tom Courtenay.

The story is set in a Soviet labor camp in the 1950s and describes a single day of an ordinary prisoner, Ivan Denisovich Shukhov. This was the first account of Stalinist repression openly published in the Soviet Union. He fled to the West to publish further books. Translated from the Russian language.
