Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Photographs by The New York Times Studio: Bill Aller, Gene Maggio, Al Wegener / Drawings by James J. Spanfeller (illustrator). Book Club Edition. We find NO book-club deboss, but nonetheless suspect this smaller octavo is a book-club issue. Some rub to the board corners. No ISBN found. Despite the comprehensive 44-page Index already printed at back of this volume, previous owner (who has fruitlessly attempted to black out her own name to top of FFE) has hand-written two redundant "index" entries to FFE and four to RFE, in blue or black ink, noting that goulash is found on pg. 413, mushrooms in sour cream on pg. 613, etc. Several of the 45 nations listed to the "Contents" page (Austria, Greece, Poland, etc.) have also been "checked off" in blue ink. The 30-odd color plates are a bit, well . . . odd, the already ornate food presentations often being framed with miscellaneous antiques, furniture, rocks, flowers, fresh vegetables and -- in one case -- Greek ruins. Needless to say, attempting to cover the cuisine of India -- from soups and appetizers through desserts -- in 12 pp. (using the somewhat limited palette of spices likely to be found in an American supermarket circa 1970, and featuring as one of the main entrees "Vindaloo Beef Curry" -- a dish surely not often encountered on the subcontinent) allows the author to touch on only a few high points, though Mr. Claiborne does considerably better with his 44-page section on "China." Presumably an association with the flailing left-wing propaganda sheet "The New York Times" was considered to be positive, in 1971. Totals 726 pp. including the aforementioned Index. Reduced from $12.

Library stamps and markings. 92 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. âHere . . . is the story of a boy who discovers himself, who basically comes to grips with that most contemporary of problems, the isolation of the individual. It is told within the near-classic framework of the story of the orphan who survives and escapes maltreatment to find love, but it is told in frank, literate terms in the lingo of todayâs youngsters. And it has, as an additional dimension, a touch of the Gothic tale, a tinge of terror and a shade of romanticism.â (The New York Herald Tribune).
