From the author's introductory remarks: In 1860 Kentucky ranked third in the number of slaveholders, though the state was only ninth in the size of its African-American population. This indicates that Kentucky was preeminently the home of the small slaveholder; even more typically than the South as a whole. Kentucky was the home of the pocket plantation; a farm, having less than ten slaves who usually worked alongside members of the master's family. The author chose Mason County for his study because of its relatively unbroken run of newspaper files, its proximity, its survival without a courthouse fire, its importance in Kentucky history, and its mix of rural and urban populations. In addition, he had an African-American colleague in Mason County, who had long been interested in local black heritage and had interviewed many senior citizens, and had amassed a collection of photographs focusing on the black community.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. (1986), 302pp, index. VG+. From the Foreword: "Kentucky was a classic breeder state, sending her children to newly opened areas where it was believed the prospects would be brighter. So pronounced was this propensity to move that in the antebellum period nearly one-third of all native-born Kentuckians were living out of state. Doubtless, many of those who moved were of the proverbial rolling-stone variety and put down shallow roots in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, or Missouri, and finally ended their days farther west. The information abstracted for this book comes from approximately 200 rare county histories and county atlases published between 1876 and 1916. The atlases often list patrons by name, birthplace, and year, and give the year they migrated to the county. Thus, post-civil War migrants, as well as early settlers are listed. In county histories the biographical information usually includes the date and county and state of birth of the biographee. In many cases, similar information appears for the parents.".
