Stanley Kober, associated with the Cato Institute, is a former Research Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies. He is a graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and received his Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. His areas of expertise include the relationship between democracy and peace, with a focus on control over the war power, and American grand strategy. He has lectured in the United States and abroad, and his work has appeared in Foreign Policy, International Affairs (London), the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal. Kober previously worked on Soviet and defense issues at SRI International (where he was managing editor of the journal, Comparative Strategy), the Center for Naval Analyses, and the Hudson Institute. NATO is facing new challenges, the principal problem being Afghanistan, where NATO's forces are being relentlessly attacked by the Taliban, and popular support for maintaining troops there is fading among NATO countries. There are other problems, including the proposed deployment of anti-ballistic missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic, a potential flashpoint in Kosovo, and the growing tension between Russia and some of its neighbors. In short, NATO is facing new challenges, and the future of the alliance is unclear. The United States should begin discussions with our allies about what a post NATO world would look like.
