Die erste Auflage - immerhin über 10.000 Exemplare - hat sich im deutschen Lehrbuchmarkt auf Anhieb behauptet und in der Neuauflage viele Verbesserungen durch Aktualisierung, aber auch inhaltliche Präzisierungen erfahren. Insbesondere wurden zwei völlig neue Kapitel zu den großen Stoffkreisläufen der Erde bzw. zur Erdentwicklung nach der großen Vereisung im Pleistozän aufgenommen. Über den Autor: Steven M. Stanley ist Professor für Paläobiologie an der Johns Hopkins University, wo er über die Evolution der Ökosysteme im Laufe der Erdgeschichte forscht. Er promovierte nach seinem Studium an der Princeton University in Yale. Sein systemischer Forschungsansatz hat auch in seinen Lehrbuchklassikern, insbesondere der neu vorliegenden deutschen Ausgabe der Historischen Geologie, seinen Ausdruck gefunden. Dieses Buch ist selbst den meisten Fachleuten wohl nur als der "Stanley" bekannt. Seit Jahren ist "er" das Standardwerk für die Erd- und Lebensgeschichte und es wird kaum einen Studenten der Geowissenschaften geben, der nicht einen wichtigen Teil seines Wissens diesem Buch verdankt. Seit einer Weile gibt es dieses klassische Lehrbuch endlich auch in deutscher Übersetzung, wobei es sich keineswegs um eine einfache Übertragung in die deutsche Sprache handelt. Dem Verlag ist es vielmehr gelungen, eine Reihe von deutschen Fachleuten für eine inhaltliche Überarbeitung des Textes zu gewinnen. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit Steven Stanley wurde der Stoff aktualisiert und hiesigen Lehrstandards angepaßt. Das Buch gliedert sich in sieben Teile. Drei davon beschäftigen sich mit den Grundprinzipien der endogenen und exogenen Kräfte, die das Angesicht der Erde im Laufe der Erdgeschichte geprägt haben. Gleichzeitig hat sich eine komplizierte Lebenswelt herausgebildet, deren Entwicklung mit geologischen und paläontologischen Methoden rekonstruiert werden kann. In didaktisch vorbildlicher Form baut die folgende Darstellung der einzelnen Erdzeitalter auf das Gelernte auf. Immer wieder werden einzelne Fragen in Form von Exkursen näher erläutert. Dies erleichtert nicht nur die Prüfungsvorbereitung, sondern lädt bereits beim bloßen Durchblättern zum Verweilen ein. Die schon in der Originalausgabe erstklassige Illustration ist in der deutschen Ausgabe noch einmal überarbeitet worden und läßt keine Wünsche offen. Einmal in die Hand genommen, wird jeder geologisch interessierte Leser rasch vergessen, daß es sich hier eigentlich um ein klassisches Lehrbuch handelt. Stanley war mein erster Kontakt mit der Geologie überhaupt. Das Ergebnisich bin sehr animiert und will mehr erfahren. Denn Stanley beschränkt sich auf die Basics. Regionale Beispiele - beispielsweise zur Entstehung mariner Sedimentationsräume - sind selten. Aber sie kommen zum richtigen Zeitpunkt. Dann öffnet sich plötzlich ein Fenster. Im gesamten Buch stecken Querverweise, die dazu anregen, genau dann in ein Kapitel zurückzuzappen, wenn bestimmte Information in einem neuen Zusammenhang wieder relevant werden. Das Ganze ist sehr interaktiv. Undin jeder Zeile schwingt Begeisterung mit. Das macht Lust auf mehr. Kein Problem, Stanley bringt zu jedem Kapitel eine Liste mit weiterführender Literatur. Das Buch ist - wie der Titel ganz klar sagt - eine Einführung. Ein Lehrbuch im besten Sinn. Nichts für Spezialisten, aber eine hervorragend ausgebaute Strasse für Generalisten und solche, die auf dem Weg in ein Fachgebiet noch ganz am Anfang stehen. 5 Sterne für Stanley, nachdem ein ganzer Sternenhimmel nicht zur Verfügung steht.
