Starobinski, Jean, 1920-. Portrait de l'artiste en saltimbanque. Paris: Gallimard, 2013, Nouv. éd. / rev. et corr. par l'auteur, 120pp., sewn PAPERBACK, small 2cm stain on lower corner of last few pages, otherwise very good copy which appears little used if at all. Art et artistes. - Illustrations throughout. ISBN 9782070770373.

very good dust-jacket, some foxing on reverse, very good gray cloth. STAROBINSKI, JEAN. Words upon words: the anagrams of Ferdinand de Saussure. Translated by Olivia Emmet. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1979, no additional printings noted on copyright page, xi, 129pp., . Ferdinand de Saussure's Course in General Linguistics laid the foundation for the modern sciences of language. That he also conducted extensive research into anagrams has until now been little known. From more than one hundred of Saussure's unpublished notebooks preserved in the Public and University Library of Geneva, Jean Starobinski has culled a rich and various sam pling of the linguistic pioneer's theoretical notes and exercises in decoding the hidden motivic theme-words embedded in poetic texts. The fragments are joined together with new critical commentary that provides development and continuity. Combing through Homer to discover laws gov-erning the distribution of consonants and vowels, Saussure accidentally noticed recurrent groups of phonemes that combined to form prolonged echoes of words of special import. Vedic incanta-tions, which are declensions of the Holy Name, have the same property. So do Virgilian epic and all classical and neoclassical Latin poetry, and even prose. Saussure saw the sounds of Aphro-dite's name woven everywhere into the fabric of De rerum nature, and, looking through the cryp tic text of a Delphic oracle reported by Livy, read its prophetic warning in plain language. The sheer weight of evidence does not always make Saussure's conclusions persuasive, espe cially since he declined to speculate on the origin or function of the anagram-forming process. But Starobinski addresses these questions, affording important insights into the phonic ma trix of poetry. This running dialogue opens to view a most illuminating text beneath the text of Saussure. 9780300020342 ISBN 0300020341.

3 lettres autographes signées 5 pp. In-4 (1) et in-8 (2) 27 juin 1988, 6 janvier 1969 et s.d.
