Il était régulièrement consulté sur des cas d'hermaphrodites et examina en particulier des personnes intersexuées célèbres à son époque tel Karl Dürrge. Dans ce traité en latin, Steglehner décrit pour la première fois le Syndrome d'insensibilité aux androgènes, connu également sous le terme de Syndrome du testicule féminisant. Lors d'une autopsie, il fut surpris de découvrir l'absence d'organe génitaux internes et deux petits testicules chez une personne de 23 ans d'apparence féminine.
