Soft cover. Condition: New. The term tantra is normally applied for the rites practiced in performance of rituals of the religious faiths of India and the neighboring countries. It appears to be some short of a psycho-therapy adopted by the primeval human society for warding off evil spirits and hazards of physical ailments. Much before the evolution of basic concept of God and religion, existence of good and bad spirits was presumed, which gave rise to mystical theology known as tantra. However it is quite complicated and it is rather difficult to discern differences between tantric rites from non-tantric rituals. Certain religious rites performed by the folks of Uttarakhand region, gives some faint idea about practices of Indian tantra and its relation with the Pön faith of neighboring region of Western Tibet known as Shang Shung. The subject matter of this book is not the methodology and concept of art (or science) of tantra. It is simply a basic study of comparative relationalship between pre Vedic Indian tantra and Pön tantra of ancient land of Shang Shung (Western Tibet). Explorers, who ventured into the forbidden land of Tibet and Central Asia at the risk of their lives, are of the opinion that the tantric practices originated in the land of Shang Shung addressed as Pönism or Bonism faith. Many of them have even suggested that this cult practice, spread in outside world; including India.

The occasion of Nandashtami, is not just an event of religious festivity in honour of Kul Devi Nanda, but a way of life for residents of the Uttarakhand. It reflects socio-economic selfless trudging, the women of the region undergo in household chore. While elderly women bid farewell to Nanda, they recite hymns with choked voice as if sending her to lead a life with a poor homeless shepherd in desolate Kailas region. They fondly admonish her for not visiting them more frequently.
