Leicestershire), flying the Egyptian flag, sailed from Hoboken on 20 March 1941, bound for Suez by way of Trinidad, Recife, Capetown and Mombasa. The crew of 137 were mostly Egyptian Muslims; of the 201 passengers, 127 (including 33 children) were Protestant missionaries from 21 mission boards, 17 were Roman Catholic missionaries. At 5:30 a.m. on 17 April, 1450 miles WNW from Capetown in blackout, without navigation lights, and similar to the profile of a British troop ship, the Zamzam was fired upon by the German raider Tamesis. Rather pious narratives by the 8 adults (with 11 children) from the Augustana Lutheran Synod, bound for Tanganyika, recount the attack, climbing down into lifeboats with children separated from their parents, capsizing of one lifeboat, and the rescue of everyone by the Tamesis. They were transferred on the 18th as prisoners to the freighter Dresden, with room for 35 passengers, which took a devious course north through the British blocade and arrived at St. Jean-de-Luz near Biarritz on 20 May. Passing through Spain to Portugal, the Augustana missionaries sailed on several ships for New York, on the way trying to convert escaping Jewish refugees, and returning between 21-30 June. Poignant letters from Africa and the U.S. express grief after the sinking was reported and all passengers were thought to have been lost.
