Add to basketHardcover Coloured Matt. Condition: As New. No Jacket. ### Shire Publications - Beam Engines- No.15 - By T E Crowley 1989 ### ## THIS BOOK: Classified AS NEW, the 1989 edition: first published in 1976, the second edition in 1978, the third edition in 1982, the fourth edition in 1986, and reprinted in 1989. Purchased from a private collector, in as-new condition. Over 35 beam engine designs illustrated with descriptions, a fantastic collection and a wonderful history. ## ## Full colour cover, satin finish. Full information where further reading and visiting is available. ## ## BEAM ENGINES: People interested in the steam engine are now well catered for by an enormous variety of books, these deal almost entirely with transport. The stationary steam engine is neglected in modern literature, and there is very little available to tell us about the largest and most varied aspects of the use of steam power: how it was put to pumping out mines in the reign of Queen Anne and to providing domestic water supplies in London not long after. All these installations were designed as beam engines; in other words, they had a rocking beam interposed between the piston and the work it had to do, and it is this type of engine that this book seeks to introduce. It was made for two centuries, and its uses were legion once the Industrial Revolution was underway. Mills, factories of all kinds, canals, railways and furnaces employed it; all the early steamships used it for motive power and, in its last and glorious phase, gigantic compound engines in cathedral-like structures showing the height of civic pride pumped the water or the sewage for almost every great city.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects. Shire books cover antiques and collectables, motoring and rural history, archaeology and Egyptology, architecture, industrial history and many other topics.## ## They were founded in 1962 by John Rotheroe, the company based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The first book published by Shire Publications was Discovering East Suffolk, a 24-page guide to the county through a series of five motoring routes and a gazetteer of the main towns and villages. They were given away to visitors via coach operators, local churches and tourist information points. The book was successful, and Shire publishers decided to sell the second edition because free copies were being sold, setting the template for the future of Shire. Over the following years, Shire expanded its Discovering series and launched several new series, including Lifelines, Shire Albums, Shire Archaeology and Shire Egyptology. ## ## In 2008, Shire began a revamp of its list. It announced that the former Shire series, including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library, which would retain and expand on the numbering system used by the old Album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. Books in the Shire Library were to have a new series cover design, as would reissued books in the Archaeology and Egyptology series. Announced that Shire's list of forthcoming publications would include an increased number of new titles, reissues of out-of-print titles and new editions of existing titles. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
