Heraldry of the Royal Families of Europe; Tables by Ji?í Louda; text by Michael MacLagan; Clarkson N. Potter, Inc./Publishers, New York, 1981. First American edition. Printed in Czechoslovakia. Loosely inserted are six folded-foolscap pages containing heraldry information for Friedrich Wilhelm II; Friedrich III; Joachim I; and Die Haus von Hohenzollern. 80 black-and-white illustrations; 150 color tables. From the blurb - During the Middle Ages when warriors were covered by heavy armor and helmets in battle, a means of identification was required and heraldry, the practice of using recognizable patterns on shields, was born. In an age when illiteracy was commonplace, these shields were transferred to seals for use in the authentication of documents. The Crusaders copied them onto their surcoats, originating the term "coat of arms." Passed on from generation to generation within a family, the patterns became personal emblems, regarded as the imprimatur of noble and royal lineage. Starting with the eleventh century, the book presents the heraldic shields as well as the genealogy of all the royal families of Europe, past and present. The tables provide detailed family trees and are grouped by country beginning with the existing monarchies. The coat-of-arms are integrated with the various matrimonial alliances to show how heraldic devices evolve and are interchanged. Additional tables give a genealogical background to important historical events involving dynastic succession, such as the Wars of the Roses and the Union of Kalmar. The text provides historical background and shows how events are reflected in the make-up of the royal coats-of-arms. Over 2,000 heraldic devices are incorporated in the tables, representing the painstaking work of Ji?í Louda, who personally researched and painted each one of them. This book is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket, that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap.
