Rabindranath Thakur (bengalisch ??????????? ????? Rabindranath ?hakur, [?obin?d??onat?? ??aku?] anhören?/?; * 7. Mai 1861 in Kalkutta; ? 7. /// Standort Wimregal Ill-Umschl2024-01 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 10.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. G. Not a first edition but a 1919 reprint courtesy of Macmillan London. Corners bumped, rubbing to edges, mild general evidence of handling and wear. Rubbing becomes fraying at corner tips esp. bottom front. Pushing and rubbing to spine crown and heel. Age together with rubbing at spine corners has resulted in splits and a bit of tearing to the blue cloth thereat. Internally, hinges fore and aft are partly split, affording peeps of the mull; binding somewhat shaken. Small bookseller's sticker to bottom corner of front pastedown (W.H. Smith in Paris). A pencilled notation "LCrit0200" to top of ffep. Some toning to front and end matter, and the glassine protective sheet for the frontispiece has left a perfect shadow in dark toning to the title page. There seems to be a single instance of underlining on p. xiv of Yeats' Introduction, in neat and rather faint colored pencil, to seven consecutive words. Some of the verse numerators are circled in plain pencil: 20, 28, 37, 43, and 48; possibly more although we noticed no others. Otherwise, pages are generally quite clean and clear. SIGNED by Tagore in English on the frontispiece: "Rabindranath Tagore / Oct. 11, 1920 / Paris". At this point in October 1920, Tagore was spending some time in Paris before embarking for America. A previously appreciated, century-old copy of a true literary masterpiece by the first non-Western recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Signed by Author(s).

nb. Condition: Very Good. First edition. STUNNING GOLD-TONED SILVER PRINT OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE BY EDWARD CURTIS, SIGNED BY BOTH TAGORE AND CURTIS. An outstanding union of photographer and subject: Edward Curtis, one of America's most sensitive and accomplished portrait photographers, and Rabindranath Tagore, the great Bengali poet, composer, playwright, and painter, "generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of early 20th-century India." Edward Curtis, known primarily for his lifelong project to document and preserve the traditions of Native Americans through photography, became a master at representing people who were unlike himself. Striving for more than a just a flat visual record, he tried (in his own words), to take "a picture that will show the soul of the people". Through his creative composition and innovative photographic techniques, Curtis helped his subjects come alive in the images. In fact, "frequently Curtis's human subjects are so powerfully present in the picture that they seem to return the observer's gaze." (Mark Gidley, Britannica). In Curtis's photograph of Tagore, the celebrated poet indeed has an intense "returning gaze" while at the same time appears somewhat ethereal and unquestionably noble. It's a beautiful image that endures as a work of art as well as a profound portrayal of its subject. Tagore was awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature -the first non-European to do so - and subsequently spent "long periods out of India, lecturing and reading from his work in Europe, the Americas, and East Asia and becoming an eloquent spokesperson for the cause of Indian independence" (ibid.). This photo, c.1913, was taken at Curtis's studio in Seattle during Tagore's visit to the United States. Signed "Rabindranath Tagore" in strong dark ink on original mount beneath the photo and "Curtis" on the lower right of the mount. With Curtis's studio stamp at the bottom left of the image. Size: Image = 6x8 in.; with original mount = 8x10 in. Seattle: c.1913. Some spots of oxidation in black background. A remarkable photograph with tones extraordinarily rich; extremely rare signed by both Tagore and Curtis.

Quarto, original cloth, lettered tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait of Tagore by Martin Vos signed and dated by Tagore beneath his image, "Rabindranath Tagore Dec. 19, 1933," 29 additional engravings including 11 tipped-in in full color with lettered tissue guards. From the famed library of Raja Shamraj Rajwant Bahadur with his ownership initials "S.R.A.S" and library notes to the pastedown noting that the book was "Received from the Golden Book of Tagore Committee 120/2, Upper Circular Road Calcutta on 1-3-1932. Pre-Publication Subscription sent by money order on 8-8-1931. Received the book by V.P.P." Indian nobleman Raja Shamraj Rajwant Bahadur assembled Indiaâ s greatest library, famed for its diverse collection of rare antiquarian manuscripts and important books. Tipped in is an autograph letter signed by Tagore in facsimile to Bhagwan Singh Gyanee and dated December 27, 1931 which reads in part, â It is hard for me to say in a few faltering words how I feel when voices greet me from my own country and from across the seas carrying to me the assurance that I have pleased many and have helped some and thus offering me the best reward of my life. Rabindranath Tagore." Additionally tipped in is a typed letter signed by Tagore on Visva-Bharati letterhead dated December 26, 1933 and addressed to the Raja which reads in part, 'Dear Raja Bahadur, On the eve of my departure from Hyderabad, allow me to offer you and Ranee Shaheba my sincere thanks for your generous contribution to the funds of Visva-Bharati. I am glad to know you realise that Visva-Bharati belongs to you all and have promised to stand by it.With best wishes, yours sincerely, "Rabindranath Tagore."' The Raja has added a note, "The Poet had paid a visit to my house on 19-12-1933. Particular in my personal album." Laid in at rear is the original transmittal envelope. In very good condition. An exceptional association. A sumptuous tribute to Tagore on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, The Golden Book of Tagore arose out of the suggestion of acclaimed French writer Romain Rolland. The salutations range from Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Kostes Palama, to Rolland himself. Tagore famously became in 1913 the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Visva-Bharati University, for which the Rajaâ s contribution are acknowledged here, was founded by Tagore and became one of Indiaâ s most renowned places of higher learning.
