Bound in publisher's illustrated paper covered boards over green cloth spine lettered in gilt. Good with lean to binding, staining to spine cloth and fading and soiling to covers, wear to corners and spine ends. Former owner name to front free endpaper and repaired tear to rear pastedown. Illustrated by the creator of the Moomins, Tove Jansson, perfectly pairing a dream-like Nordic influence with Tolkien's iconic fantasy.

Condition: Very Good +. Orebro, Sweden: Raben & Sjogren, 1962. First Tove Jansson-illustrated Edition, preceded in Sweden by Tore Zetterholm's translation, Hompen, in 1947. Octavo. 308 pages. 12 full page black and white illustrations; smaller vignette pieces by Jansson throughout. Original green cloth with pictorial boards; spine stamped in gilt. Boards show light shelfwear with some mild bumping to edges and very slight forward lean. Binding is sound. Light creasing to bottom corners of first forty pages but otherwise interior clean and unmarked. An attractive and well-preserved copy. Jansson, a Swedish-speaking Finnish author and illustrator, was well known for her "Moomin" children's books, but tried a new method of drawing in her illustrations for both the Swedish and Finnish publications of The Hobbit. Her highly regarded illustrations stand out not only for their compelling detail and artistry, but also as a lens to see The Hobbit reflected back to the community that created its Finnish and Norse mythological source material.
