About this Item: Safari Press. Long Beach, California. 2011 1st English language edition. 8vo (165 x 245mm). Ppxviii,332. Colour and b/w photographs. Blue cloth gilt. Blue slip-case. Edition limited to 1,000 numbered copies. Mint in slip-case. Signed and numbered by the author. There are few names as enduring in the field of African big-game hunting as that of Tony Sanchez-Arino. Not only has he been hunting on the African continent for over five decades, but he is also one of the very few left who actually had significant hunting experience in Africa prior to the departure of the colonial powers. What other hunter can recall gorillas still being shot legally, and who else has twenty-eight elephants to his name with tusks of 100 pounds or greater? This book is a highly eclectic mix of the old and the new - reminiscences of his early days and African hunting as it is today. Tony recalls his days of hunting in Somalia before anarchy raised its ugly head. And he remembers highly unusual hunts in Gabon, Spanish Guinea, and the Northern Frontier District of Kenya, when it still was a waterless paradise with huge tuskers and a few nomadic tribes. In another chapter he tells us of the extraordinary tusks purchased by Newland and Tarlton, a safari company, for almost nothing; these tusks weighed in at an incredible 169 and 172 pounds! Tony tells how the company acquired them and how it eventually sold them again. for almost nothing! Tony also gives us a good insight into the pioneer Spanish hunters who plied their trade in Africa, and even though they have now been largely forgotten, their stories are no less fascinating. As for modern African hunting, Tony gives us an insightful look into the current situation on the African lion and the uncertainty that is constantly present when operating a safari anywhere in Africa today. There's also a chapter on how he shot his 2,000th buffalo, a riveting story of a bongo that he tried to hunt, and the truth behind the invisible northern white rhinos. Whether it's a tale of a banana-plantation-raiding elephant or an entertaining story on the elf of the African woods, the yellow-backed duiker, Tony Sanchez-Arino has one of the most entertaining and relaxing storytelling manners of anyone writing today. If you love hunting in Africa, you will love Tony's new book, which is certain to contain the most diverting tales of hunting adventures anywhere. . Seller Inventory # 31754

About this Item: Safari Press, 2013. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Volume 16 in Safari Press's Classics in Sporting Firearms Series. 197 pages, First Edition. HAND NUMBERED EDITION OF ONLY 500, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. BOUND IN TAN CLOTH WITH GOLD STAMPING, AND HOUSED IN A STURDY SLIPCASE. Tony Sanchez is nearing his sixtieth year as a hunter in Africa, a record that is hard to equal. With such a great amount of time spent in pursuit of dangerous game comes a great deal of experience with calibers and rifles. Right from the outset--during his hunts in West Africa during the 1950s--he was interested in what type of gun and what kind of bullet he was shooting. That interest in firearms and ammunition has never dimmed. His fascination with the subject can be viewed as one of the great loves of his life--along with his love for his wife Isabel, and his love of elephants. As might be expected from a man who likes the "big" in big game, this book starts with the .375 and works its way up to the .700. All calibers in between are covered, which he breaks down into the calibers for bolt actions (a total of 16 calibers) and the rimmed cartridges for double rifles (a total of 14 calibers). Tony has shot double and bolt-action rifles alike, and he has been a well-known client of numerous European manufacturers who have delivered to him a great variety of guns. He likes doubles as much as bolt actions, and it is refreshing to see no bias in his approach to these completely different types of weapons. He tells us which bullets and which actions work and which ones do not. With an almost unbelievable amount of elephant, lion, buffalo kills to his name, he can justly be said to have more experience with "The African Calibers" on dangerous game than any other person alive. His book will be read by generations to come because his advise is timeless, and because it is based on vast experience. An excellent reference. The limited edition is now out of print.
