Swedish translation of the Qu'ran. Tall 8vo., cont. half calf, marble boards, gilt decoration on the spine, (xii),80, 408pp. Cheap paper browned, some minor wear to the foot of the spine but certainly a very good copy of this uncommon Swedish translation by the orientalist Carl Johan Tornberg [1807-1877]. Contemporary half russet morocco over cloth boards, sine with gilt rules, gilt lettering, and gilt-decorated compartments, pale blue endpapers. Text in Swedish. Old ownership inscription to flyleaf. Spine with some gentle sunning and light rubbing, generally a very good copy in a smart leather binding. Carl Johan Tornberg , born 23 October 1807 in Linköping , died 6 September 1877 in Lund , was a Swedish orientalist, numismatist and university professor. Tornberg began studying Arabic as a high school student , became a student in 1826, a master of philosophy and a candidate of theology in 1833 and, after publishing his dissertation Fragmenta quædam libri Husn el-muhádhara (parts 15, 183435), which dealt with the history of Egypt by Suyuti, in 1835 he became a docent in Arabic literature, all in Uppsala . Over the next two years, Tornberg continued his studies in Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and above all in France, where he studied Arabic, Persian, and Turkish under the guidance of the most famous scholars of his time, Silvestre de Sacy, Étienne Marc Quatremère, and Pierre Amédée Jaubert . This is the second complete Swedish translation of the Koran. The first was done by Fredrik Crusenstolpe in 1843. After Tornberg, Zettersteen's translation followed and recently a fourth translation has been done by Mohammed Knut Bernström.
