About this Item: Lumiere Press, 2007. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Toronto: Lumiere Press, 2007. (11 3/8 x 8 1/8 in., 29 x 20.5 cm). 98pp. First facsimile edition (of the original hand-made limited-edition of 250 copies) produced in and edition of 1500 copies. Natural linen backed paper wrapped boards, printed with a repeating motif designed by Michael Torosian based on elements in Drtikol's photograph illustrated within, printed paper label on spine (a fine copy save for the slightest wear to bottoms, this a presentation copy with recipient's name inked on the presentation label pasted to the front paste-down endpaper). From the publisher: "The story of the Howard Greenberg Gallery, vividly chronicled by New York art writer Lyle Rexer; Greenberg's reflections on selected works from his personal collection; and a chronology of the exhibition history of the gallery, have provided an unprecedented canvas on which to merge fine book making and photographic scholarship. The centrepiece of the book is a portfolio of 25 masterful photographs drawn from Greenberg's personal collection. Each image is paired with Greenberg's thoughtful assessments and recollections. As characterized by Michael Torosian in his introduction, "The portfolio is the synthesis of erudition and passion, a connoisseur's survey, and it's also a memoir, a look back at some of the touchstones that have made up a collection, a career and a life." Twenty-five years of exhibitions are detailed in a compilation that encapsulates the history of the gallery." A great book suited to its subject, most handsomely produced by the esteemed Lumiere Press. Uncommon. Seller Inventory # 2010778

Published on the occasion of the 2003 exhibition Manufactured Landscapes: The Photographs of Edward Burtynsky, at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. Fine in Fine dust jacket. From the publisher: "Over the past twenty-five years, the internationally renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky has been an explorer of unfamiliar places where human activity has reshaped the surface of the land. His astonishing large-scale color photographs of the landscapes of mining, quarrying, railcutting, recycling, oil refining, and shipbreaking uncover a stark, almost sublime beauty in the residue of industrial 'progress.' The implicit social and environmental upheavals that underlie these images make them powerful emblems of our times. This handsome catalogue of the first major retrospective of Burtynsky's work features essays by Lori Pauli, Kenneth Baker, and Mark Haworth-Booth, as well as a wide-ranging interview with the artist by Michael Torosian.". About this Item: Toronto, Canada: Lumiere Press, 2004. Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 55 pages. Published in 2004. Landmark collection of photographs. The very first appearance of the sequence in book form. "Hors de Commerce" Edition of two HC-annotated copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the Deluxe Edition of 36 numbered copies and the Limited Edition of 200 numbered copies. The rarest and most collectible edition of the book. An austerely elegant production by Dave Heath and Michael Torosian: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with black cloth overboards and titles pasted on the spine, as issued: Hand-bound in Japanese Asahi bookcloth and Bugra mould-made paper. Patterned in black and gold cloth overboards. Photographic Sequence by Dave Heath. Two additional photographs neatly hand-tipped on two separate pages. Introduction, "A Pilgrim's Progress", by Michael Torosian. "A Year In Chorwon" by Dave Heath. Composed in the rare typeface Linotype Falcon. Images printed on Utopia Premium Paper, utilizing the most advanced "stochastic" tritone lithography, and then delicately varnished. Text printed in LetterPress on Biblio Paper, a mould-made sheet. 7 X 9 inch original silver-gelatin print of "Howard Crawford, Jr, Korea, 1953", whose titles are embossed directly on recto, printed in black letters on the opposite page ("en face"), is signed in pencil on verso by the photographer and encased in its own luxurious folio. Khaki pictorial hard board slipcase, which houses both the book and the print folio. In protective plastic sheet. Without DJ, as issued. Published in conjunction with Howard Greenberg Gallery New York and Stephen Bulger Gallery Toronto on the occasion of the photographs' 50th anniversary. Presents, in its ultimate collectible edition, Dave Heath's "Korea: Photographs 1953-1954". Evocative portraits of American soldiers in the Korean War, in a lovingly produced portfolio. The sequence was first shown in 1958 to enormous critical acclaim for the young photographer: "Mr. Heath is a new photographer, and truly a discovery. His pictures reveal compassion, understanding, penetration, and a masterly use of the medium" (The New York Times). "Heath photographed his fellow soldiers in the winter of 1953-54, the early months of a tenuous truce, producing a suite of introspective portraits permeated with the malaise of war. It is a body of work that defined the young photographer as an artist" (Michael Torosian). The accompanying print captures this "introspection-cum-malaise" quality in the movingly beautiful portrait of Howard Crawford, Jr. Dave Heath died on July 1, 2016 at the age of 85. An absolute "must-have" title for Dave Heath collectors. This copy is one of only two "Hors de Commerce" copies, indicated/marked as such ("H/C") on the Back Limitation Page by the publisher. It comes with a 7 X 9 inch original silver-gelatin print of "Howard Crawford, Jr, Korea, 1953" that is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in pencil on verso by Dave Heath. The print's titles are embossed directly on recto and printed in black letters on the opposite page ("en face"). It is encased in its own luxurious folio. This title is a great art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only "Hors de Commerce" copy available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: Dave Heath books available online command thousands of dollars (rightly so). Whereas his vintage prints command tens of thousands from his gallery. This may be many collectors' best chance to own both a book and an original print by a truly great photographer. A rare signed copy thus. 26 tritone plates, 1 color plate, 1 original silver-gelatin print. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy.
