Rajasthan is where all the country's similes and metaphors appear to have come together. Sand dunes wooded hills and amazing lakes palaces and rugged forts men and women in colourful turbans and sarees bustling towns and quiet villages camels elephants and tigers harsh sunlight and the cool evening breeze are all here in abundance. But they form only part of an intricate tapestry. Beneath the surface expect to find many contradictions. Wherever you travel particularly when you escape from the popular tourist destinations you will come across the unexpected whether it is a local fair or a breathtaking view. The mood and the rhythm of the countryside changes from one region to another and from season to season. It is a land of surprises. It is a land of amazing natural beauty that can fascinate even the most seasoned traveller. A magical sojourn reverberating with age old culture and traditions the state enfolds in its lap a diverse kaleidoscope of stunningly beautiful and fascinating artefacts. Hardbound. Condition: As New. New. Udaipur or Udyapoora in ancient texts can be best described as The Jewel in the Crown of Rajasthan with its palaces and pavilions its gardens and groves its exquisite lakes and their island palaces monsoon palaces a palace for any reason. It has been subjected to never ending epithets one being the City of Enchantment. Louis Rousselet in his book India and Its Native Princes (1878) said I stood in ecstasy gazing on the sublime panorama spread at my feet. It resembled one of the fairy cities in the Arabian Nights. Udaipur reminds the author of the small and remote villages of Greece where there are no big supermarkets. Here we still find the local bakery the tailor and the cobbler. Most shops have been in the same family for generations. The author hopes that it will always be like this in Udaipur and he worry constantly that progress will replace the small town charm of Udaipur. Just like it has done in already so many parts of the world. 162 pp.
