About this Item: Jonathan Cape, London, 1929. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Illustrations, Maps. (illustrator). First Edition. London: Jonathan Cape, 1929. First Edition. Original erratum slip for error at page 100 laid in at that page. Arranged from his poems and translated by Florence Ayscough. Frontis. portrait. Replete with oriental illustrations, maps at rear. Association copy, this being the copy of famous operatic lyric soprano Emma Eames, with her bookplate at front pastedown. 9 1/8" x 6 1/2", 450 pp. + maps. Green cloth, gilt cover device and gilt spine lettering with English and Chinese characters. Fore-edges uncut, top edges dyed. Minor pushing at spine ends, a couple of unabraded dings at small spots toward cover edges, but really not much; Eames bookplate. Very bright gilt and bright green cloth, firm binding. Bright, tight and handsome; Near Fine, lacking the jacket. See scans. Termed an autobiography; that it is, but the volume is about evenly divided between the biography of Chinese poet Tu Fu and examples of his poems, and is nicely enhanced with a large number of delicate illustrations as well. A nice association copy, with the delicate and artful bookplate of Emma Eames (1865-1952), Shanghai-born international opera star as a lyric soprano, in essentially fine condition at the front pastedown, for the collector of those. See any number of websites for her biography and accomplishments. With the strong, bright condition and the original erratum slip as well, overall a nice collectible. Please review scans. l50n.
