First Edition
2 vols. Large 8vo. (270 x 194 mm). pp. (iv), 386, (i), (vi); 390, (vi). Each vol. with half-title, title and frontispiece and a total of 199 hors-texte monochrome plates as well as numerous monochrome vignettes, all engraved by Brevière after Grandville. Original publisher's maroon morocco, boards ruled in blind with matching gilt vignettes to front and rear boards and spines, titles gilt to spines, cream moiré endpapers, two original part wrappers retained, a.e.g. The first edition of Grandville's anthropomorphic masterpiece in the deluxe publisher's binding. This exceptional copy, bound in full maroon morocco, features all of the plates in the first issue (as per Carteret) and the first issue of the binding incorporating the special tools after Grandville's designs but without the additional decorative tools to the corners of the central panels of the front boards. The legend 'Badigeonographie générale des murailles de la France et de l'étranger' to the frontispiece, later removed by the censor, is present and four of the original yellow paper part wrappers (the two volumes were issued in 100 parts) are retained. Grandville's inspirational illustrations were engraved on wood by Brévière, coted by Ray as 'the one craftsman whose renderings of his work Grandville refused to criticize'. The twenty-nine tales by various authors of the Scènes de la Vie Privée et Publique des Animaux are accompanied by J. J. Grandville's wonderful anthropomorphic illustrations. The tales themselves are by the foremost authors of the day, with four by Honoré de Balzac (Peines de Coeur d'une Chatte Anglaise, Guide-Ane à l'Usage des Animaux qui Veulent Parvenir aux Honneurs, Voyage d'un Lion d'Afrique à Paris and Les Amours de Deux Bêtes), as well as tales by George Sand (Voyage d'un Moineau à Paris), Paul Bernard (Les Animaux Médecins), Charles Nodier, Jules Janin, Paul de Musset and so on. The majority of the stories and text is by P.-J. Stahl, who wrote the Preface to the first volume. In contrast to all of the other plates, the final plate in volume two depicts human figures - the authors themselves - as animals in the Jardin-des-Plantes in Paris, regarded by spectating animals, while being sketched by Grandville himself. 'Through Grandville's animals, Hetzel and his colleagues [the authors] offered a witty and telling commentary on contemporary politics and personalities. Bouchot described the result as the best satire on French manners during the middle of the century . Returning to the 'têtes-de-bêtes' of 'Les métamorphoses du jour', Grandville provided 323 illustrations, about two-thirds of which are full-page plates . '. (Ray). 'Il a été exécuté pour les SCÈNES DES ANIMAUX des reliures et cartonnages artistiques qui sont parmi les plus beaux dans ce genre.' (Carteret). A rare complete last series of the legendary Ottoman intellectual magazine Servet-I Fünun, which introduced the popular Western culture to the East - Servet-i Fünun or the Wealth of Knowledge was a famous Ottoman magazine, published between 1891 and 1944. Starting as an illustrated with scientific articles and reports, accompanied with humour and literature, it soon turned into a leading literary magazine, publishing modern Ottoman poetry and literature. The group of authors, which gathered around the magazine between 1896 and 1901, passed into the history of literature under titles "New Literature" or the "Servet-i Fünun Lietrarure". This is a complete set of the last 211 issues in Ottoman language starting with no. 1 after the reformation of the newspaper in 1924 and ending with the transformation of the script to Latin in 1928. Although the magazine was continued being published after this date for another 16 years, it lost much of its charm. The choice of motifs of the articles shows the newspaper's fascination of the West. The articles especially promote the women's liberation, in the sense of exposing female bodies in roles of dancers, movie actresses and flappers, but also as emancipated women, female pilots, horse riders and women wearing men's clothing. Although following the politics of newly founded Republic of Turkey and countries of the former Ottoman Empire, such as Saudi Arabia, Servet-i Fünun published most of the articles on the foreign subjects. The journalists were especially fascinated by the modern world in Germany, France and in the United States, including the rights of the African Americans, the contemporary Japanese politics, explorations, technology etc. The editor of the magazine from the first number in 1888 until his death in 1942 was Ahmed Ihsan Tokgöz (1868 1942), a fascinating influential figure of the late Ottoman Empire, a publisher, whiter and translator, who connected the influences from the West with Ottoman tradition. Growing up in Shkodra, Albania, and Damascus, Syria, Ahmed Ihsan finished a law degree. A keen translator and a big fan of the Jules Verne novels, he made first translations of Verne's text to Ottoman, starting a new genre of the adventure novels in the Ottoman world. Ihsan also authored the first modern travelogue through Europe, mentioning the Orient Express.

This is an archive of materials related to the building of the Williamsburg (New East River) Bridge which undoubtedly had been put together by engineers who worked on the bridge between 1899 and 1909. The bridge was opened in 1903, but some of the items postdate that opening. The most interesting and singular items in the group are a series (not a complete run, however) of nine clearly well-used diaries detailing the day-by-day activities. There are two diaries dated from 1901, written in different hands, one showing activities related to the Brooklyn anchorage, the other mostly related to higher level administrative and contractual matters. There are other items as well, including a folder of correspondence and reports to and from the Commissioner of Bridges during the period of construction of the bridge, a scrapbook of newspaper clippings with notable events during the construction, printed reports from the Commissioner of Bridges from the period of the bridge's construction, and other files and paper which have not yet been detailed. We can make available a spreadsheet which provides a listing and brief descriptions of the component items in the lot, This is a most interesting lot of original source material which touches on both the engineering and administrative sides of the construction of the bridge.

Overall in a good condition. [Rules and Establishments of the Cavalry [i. e. Order] of Sanctiago-del-Espada. With the History of its Origin and Fundamentals]. A superb example of a rare late 16th century regulations for the Spanish Order of Santiago, printed in red and black, with a unique binding and a prominent provenance. The Spanish Order of Santiago, founded in the 12th century, is a religious and military order with international members, including women. Named after the Patron Saint of Spain, Saint James the Greater, it was originally establish for protection of the pilgrims on their route to Santiago de Compostela and to defend the Iberian Peninsula from the Muslim Moors, with the goal to protect Christianity. The Order of Santiago soon became a prestigious European order with its knights recognizable by the symbols of Santiago Cross, being a red cross, with the lower part shaped in a form of a sword and the arms as fleurs-de-lis. A major step in the organization of the prominent Order of Santiago was made by Pope Adrian VI., when in 1523 he placed it under protection of the Spanish Crown, where it remains until this day. The order published the first printed book with its regulations and decrees, relevant for the knights, already in 1503 (Sevilla, Juan Pegnitzer) and from then on regularly with updated text. This is an especially handsome edition, with attractive wood-cut titles, decorated with Santiago crosses, printed in red. Our example, with venerable provenance, is ornated with an unique tooled and hand-painted binding. The wood-cuts were made by a superb 16th century spanish engraver and goldsmith Juan de Arfe (1535- 1603). Provenance: A page, mounted with the inner margin on later blank sheets before the first printed title, bears old owner s signatures in brown ink, written on one page, probably followed chronologically: A lengthy inscription by Lodovico (Ludovico) Guasco from a north Italian noble family. He mentions himself a knight of the Order of Santiago (probably late 16th century, or early 17th century). - Galeazzo Pallavicino of Cremona (late 16th or early 17th century), from a prominent North Italian noble family, also known for its mentorship of artists. The signed name could refer to one of the three counts with the same name from the family Pallavicino (deceased in 1582, 1592,1666). Co. Teodoro, Count of Albani (possibly the canon of the Bergamo cathedral who in 1642 became the first principle of the Accademia degli Eccitati in Bergamo). The book appears to be rebound in the time of Baroque. Binding with a coat of arms with an eagle, crossbones and four gold fleurs-de-lis, of an anonymous owner, whose name is abbreviated to Co. Sar. (Co. standing probably for Conte, a count). (Possibly 17th or early 18th century). Ex-Libris of Paolo Vimercati Sozzi (1801 1883) mounted on a blank page. Vimercati Sozzi, a nobleman and a knight of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, was a prominent Italian collector, antiquarian and author, specialized mostly in Bergamo and North-Italian art. He was corresponding with contemporary European scientists. Late 19th century book stamp by Williams and Norgate, booksellers in Oxford, mounted in the lower inner corner of front board. Ex-Libris of Pietro Ciriaci (1885 1966), an Italian Cardinal of the Catholic Church, on the top of the first loose blank paper. A Note on Rarity - We could trace examples in following institutions: Universitat de Barcelona, Biblioteca Nacional de España, Universidad de Sevilla, Harvard University, Huntington Library, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Universitat Rovira i Virgili CRAI, Bibliothèque interuniversitaire Sainte-Geneviève. In this set, nearly all the plates are not folded, in strong contrast to copies where the plates are included in the text volumes, nearly all folded, and often trimmed. Does not include plate VIII in serie III, volume XX [either not published or never bound in; it is described as Carte géologique de la Russie d'Europe, and should contain a "coupe géologique du nord au sud"; however, it is also lacking in the only other copy of série 3 vol. 20 that we have seen, and it is absent too in a digitalized copy on the internet (annales ensmp) The description of this plate in the "Explications des planches" is incomplete, as if the compiler had not seen it either]. All other plates present. Corners slightly worn, some very marginal water staining, but generally in very good condition. Cat. BM(NH) [Serial Publications] 1, 83.

First Editions; complete in 37 volumes; original black cloth decorated in red (first 14 titles); original green cloth decorated in black (next 12 titles); original brown cloth decorated in black (final 11 titles); all with gilt title bands on the spines. and in fine or near fine condition. Thomas Niles of Roberts Brothers conceived the idea of publishing books with "no name" of the author provided. A contemporary ad announced the series: "These novels are to be written by eminent authors, and in each case the authorship of the work is to remain an unviolable secret. No name will help the novel, or story, to success. Its success will depend solely on the writer's ability to catch and retain the reader's interest." Over the years the authorship of most of the volumes has been discovered, about 30 of the 37 books of which were by women. The best-known of these publications is A Masque of Poets, which prints the poetry of Celia Thaxter, Christina Rossetti, Louisa May Alcott, Lowell, Thoreau, and most importantly Emily Dickinson, whose poem 'Success' appears, the only poem of hers to see publication in her lifetime. A second famous volume is Louisa May Alcott's A Modern Mephistopheles, a somewhat darker work than she is known for. A third is J.T. Trowbridge's A Great Match, a baseball fiction incunable. This series was assembled over a twenty-four year period by a colleague, and is a remarkable achievement. While complete sets must exist somewhere, we've never seen one, and certainly have never seen one for sale. The three titles mentioned, given their renown and value, are the easiest to find; some of the others are so obscure and elusive as to defy diligent efforts to acquire them. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
