Item Description: Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1876-1887, 1887. First Editions; complete in 37 volumes; original black cloth decorated in red (first 14 titles); original green cloth decorated in black (next 12 titles); original brown cloth decorated in black (final 11 titles); all with gilt title bands on the spines. and in fine or near fine condition. Thomas Niles of Roberts Brothers conceived the idea of publishing books with "no name" of the author provided. A contemporary ad announced the series: "These novels are to be written by eminent authors, and in each case the authorship of the work is to remain an unviolable secret. No name will help the novel, or story, to success. Its success will depend solely on the writer's ability to catch and retain the reader's interest." Over the years the authorship of most of the volumes has been discovered, about 30 of the 37 books of which were by women. The best-known of these publications is A Masque of Poets, which prints the poetry of Celia Thaxter, Christina Rossetti, Louisa May Alcott, Lowell, Thoreau, and most importantly Emily Dickinson, whose poem ÒSuccessÓ appears, the only poem of hers to see publication in her lifetime. A second famous volume is Louisa May AlcottÕs A Modern Mephistopheles, a somewhat darker work than she is known for. A third is J.T. TrowbridgeÕs A Great Match, a baseball fiction incunable. This series was assembled over a twenty-four year period by our colleague Rick Loomis (Sumner & Stillman), and is a remarkable achievement. While complete sets might exist somewhere, weÕve never seen one, and certainly have never seen one for sale. The three titles mentioned, given their renown and value, are the easiest to find; some of the others are so obscure and elusive as to defy diligent efforts to acquire them. Item Description: 31 - London - Punch Office, 1847. Hardcover. Book Condition: NEAR FINE. Seventy eight volumes of the satirical and humorousperiodical Punch. A superb set and a very long run, finely bound and in lovely condition. Very very hard to find privately owned runs of Punch in a good binding. Volumes 12-93 and 96 to 181. Dated from 1847 to 1874 and then 1881 to 1931. The majority of the volumes to this set are the periodical for that entire year, which are mostly the almanac. 1874 volume is Jun-December only and 1881 is July-December. Illustrated with humorousimagesthroughout all volumes. These seventy eight volumes of Punchspan the editorshipof fiveindividuals. Mark Lemon was the first editor ofPunch andedited from 1841-1870. Shirley Brooks edited Punchfrom 1870-74, Tom Taylor edited the periodical from 1874-1880, Francis Burnand 1880-1906 and OwenSeaman from1906-32. BothFrancis Burnand and Owen Seaman were knighted for their effortswith Punch. Punch or The London Charivari was a Britishweekly magazine of humour and satirefirst established by Henry Mayhew and Ebenezer Landells. It helped to coin and demonstrated the earliest examples of 'cartoon',in the modern sense of a humorous illustration. Several notable artists contributed to Punch such as John Leech, Richard Doyle, John Tenniel and Charles Keene. The first editor, Lemon, was aclose friend with Charles Dickens and althoughDickens nevercontributed toPunch, allusions to him were often printed and illustrations from Dickens' novels were reprinted with well-known political figures substituted for Dickens' characters. Forexample, in the 1851 volume of this set there is an allusion to Dickens' Oliver Twist and the character Fagin. The seventy eight volumes of this set follow the steady increase in popularity of Punch andfinishes just short of its peak print run inthe 1940's with 184,000 printed in 1947. There was a spike in the circulation during both the war and the inter-war years due to the boost in morale it gave people. By the turn of the century Punch became a national institution andthe writers and artists had become household names. These volumes contain all of theissuesrunning up to as well as during and immediately after the First World War. The 1915 edition in particular contains several satirical pieces regarding thewar. Prior owner's bookplate to several of the volumes, H W Trinder. Item Description: - New York - Reinhold Publishing Co., 1950. Hardcover. Book Condition: FINE. A continuous 23 year run of selected sections from one of the 20th century's most significant architectural magazines, uniformly bound by Bayntun Riviere of Bath. The sections included from the magazine are those concerning the design of either real, planned, or hypothetical buildings. Sections such as the 'newsletter' or 'manufacturers' literature' are not included. Thus there is a streamlined focus on design content. The relevant sections from each month's magazine are bound together by year, with each volume running from January to December as one would expect. The pagination istruncated as a result: for most months the pagination will run from roughly 50-120. Thus there are twelve separately paginated sections in each volume, corresponding loosely to those figures. Replete with illustrations, both photographic and draughted. Colour photos become more frequent from the 1957 volume onwards. There is a general American focus, but the wider world is not neglected. Every imaginable sort of building is covered, from schools to hotels to offices and houses. Contemporary design is rigorously and intelligently discussed in the accompanying articles, which situate the featured buildings within their wider social and practical context. New materials and technology are explored, and ambitious theoretical designs are analysed. The architectural discussions, by their very nature, provide a fascinating angle on the wider cultural, economic, and political world of their particular year. For example, one will find the design and utility of bomb shelters discussed at the height of the cold war, and then 'omnibuildings' eagerly anticipated in the late 60s. In 1969 there is a feature titled 'Machine Art Past and Technology Art Present', while in 1970 the influence of modern technology on the design of movie theatres is explored. A beautifully boundunparallelled primary source for the history of architecture, as well as for socio-economic history, in the midto late twentieth century. Condition: In half morocco by Bayntun Riviere. Externally excellent with just the occasional light mark to the boards. The 1955 volume has a small bookseller's stamp to the front pastedown. Internally, generally clean and bright, and firmly bound. Overall: FINE. Bookseller Inventory # 050551

Item Description: the Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. ***CONTENT: This set of 59 quarto books contains all the scarce, original volumes in the U.S. Geological Survey's "Monograph" series. Authors include many noteworthy 19th/early 20th century American geologists; these volumes provide a superb record of geological research in the eastern, midwest and western states. Subjects covered include: areal geology, mineralogy, mining, paleontology, hydrology, glacial studies, structural geology, petrology, geomorphology, etc. This set includes the rarities: Dutton's "Grand Canyon", Gilbert's "Lake Bonneville", Marsh's "Dinocerata", Emmons's "Leadville", Hague's "Yellowstone", Becker's and Lord's "Comstock", a fine set of Osborn's "Titanotheres", etc. These books have literally hundreds of chromolithograph maps, fossil and photographic plates, panoramic views, figures, profiles, and charts. The folio atlases accompanying 9 reports will be sold separately. ***CONDITION: All volumes are bound in the original brown publisher's cloth, with gilt titles and crossed gilt hammers embossed on the backstrip. Their condition is from Good to Fine, though 50 of the 59 volumes are VG or better. Covers are very sound on all volumes; gilt lettering and spine decoration typically bright. All backstrips and covers are firmly attached by intact outer joints; the inner hinges are tender in only a few volumes. Bindings typically very firm. In nearly all volumes, the text pages and illustrations are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright. Volumes 2 and 49 show edge dampness, but the text/plate areas are minimally affected (see photos from these volumes). Most volumes show no prior ownership; a few have old spine labels and other mild ownership indications internally. Overall this is a handsome, remarkably well-preserved set. Item Description: [Mostly Onitsha]: Various Publishers 1959-1970s, 1959. Various printings. 30 slim octavo pamphlets. An excellent, representative sampling of the popular literature that flourished in West African market stalls in the 1960s and 70s, most of it characterized by sensational (and even slightly prurient) content, rustic production values, and a disarmingly naive (to an American reader's eyes at least) approach to its subject matter. A stunning First Edition Collection of the FIRST ONE HUNDRED GRANTA magazines numbers 1-100. Publisher's printed wraps, as issued. All copies are in near Fine condition with removable protective covers. One of the most influential literary magazine of the last quarter century. From its beginning,Granta featured the best of contemporary literary prose, travel writing and cultural commentary.Bill Buford and Pete de Bolla first published this 'New Series' whilst at King's College, Cambridge,in 1979.Their editorial approach ensured the early inclusion of new work from some of the best contemporary writers. For instance, issue three featured substantial portions of Salman Rushdie's as yet unpublished 'Midnight's Children' and Russell Hoban's 'Ridley Walker,' both novels to appear later that year. The original editions of the first three Granta issues were not robust productions and are now extremely scarce in their own rights. The very first issue is extremely scarce and often turns up as the later printing of that year. This set includes the TRUE FIRST issue of Number One issued in Spring 1979 which is in VERY GOOD ++ or better condition. It also has the original loose compliments slip inserted. The collection has benefited by the addition of over 390 SIGNATURES by over 150 AUTHORS who have SIGNED at their various contributions. Some of the titles are accompanied by tickets or photos of the authors at the signing events to serve as provenance - further details can be supplied. The following list of authors is not exhaustive but gives a flavour of who has SIGNED these titles: Adiche Chimamanda : Isabel Allende : Martin Amis : Paul Auster : Margaret Atwood : Pat Barker : Beryl Bainbridge : Iain Banks : John Banville : Julian Barnes : John Berger : T.G.Boyle : Peter Carey : Bill Bryson : D. The thirty-nine volumes in this set were published under the periodical s founding editor, A. B. Becher (1796-1876). During his editorship, the magazine covered the Opium Wars and the Crimean War, emigration to Australia and New Zealand, major expeditions in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, the rapid development of steam power, the opening of the Suez Canal, the laying of the Atlantic Cable and the establishment of lifeboat stations and lighthouses around the British coast.
