About this Item: Kirjastus Kunst, Tallinn, Estonia, 1976. Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Toots, Villu (illustrator). First Edition. Tallinn, Estonia: Kirjastus Kunst, 1976. First Edition. Signed, warmly inscribed and dated by the author in calligraphic freehand on the ffep, to Don Moy, contributing editor of Fine Print. Toots' "Happy New Year" self-portrait remembrance greeting card is laid in as well, also signed, also to Moy. Quarto, 142 pp. Bright yellow buckram boards, black spine with yellow imprinting. Extremely minimal peripheral wear, as close to fine as near fine can be. In protective mylar. A tour-de-force of the esteemed Estonian calligraphic artist, 31 pages of text [in Estonian] with the balance of the volume being a broad variety of Toots' artful calligraphic works, each full page, black-on-white, white-on-black, and in some cases bicolor. One of these is a calligraphically presented quote from Stanley Morison: "Calligraphy is a term used for the description of a hand in which the freedom is so nicely reconciled with the order that the understanding eye recognizes the scribe's right proportioning of the part to the whole of the letter, the letter to the whole of the word, the words to a length of line, the lines to a due depth of area, and pleasing disposition of the block of writing upon the page area, by the retention of consistent margins." Toots in so admired in his specialty that, among other honors, he has had several new typefaces named for him - not to mention the posh Harrogate, England restaurant of the same name. Scarce calligraphic collectible. lG4. Signed, Inscribed, Dated By Au. Seller Inventory # 000321

A catalog in color and in black and white of the works of former students of celebrated calligraphic artist Villu Toots, at his institute. Moy, a contributing editor of Fine Print, at the fine illustration by Vanda Purik on the verso of the cover (under which is Purik's (presumed) signature]. Also signed by Toots after the introduction. Toots in so admired in his specialty that, among other honors, he has had several new typefaces named for him - not to mention the posh Harrogate, England restaurant of the same name. Almost 100 pages of calligraphic art by former students of Toots, in wide and beautiful variety. In heavy mylar protective jacket, presumed to be original accompaniment. About this Item: No Publisher, No Location, 1987. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Toots, Villu (illustrator). First Edition. [no place] [probably Tallinn, Estonia]: [no publisher], 1987. Limited edition, this being #165 (of 250). Signed, warmly inscribed, dated by the author on the flyleaf, signed again at the limitation page, and signed yet again beneath a beautiful tipped-in sample of a relief-raised bookplate by Toots, centered on black & gray designed page as the apparent final introductory page. Also, two items of laid-in ephemera including ALS (see description below). See scans. Quarto, unpaginated, oriental binding of maroon leatherette boards, "Paraff" in gilt calligraphy on the cover, gilt spine titling. A collection of many of the professionally commissioned works of celebrated Estonian calligraphic artist Villu Toots, including a large number of individualized bookplates designed by him, between 1951 and 1987. Color and black and white works are shown, many full-page. Introduced and indexed by Toots. Signed, very warmly inscribed and dated by him (Tallinn, June, 1988) to Don M. Moy, a contributing editor of Fine Print, at the flyleaf, with two more signatures as above. Laid in are a card from Toots to Moy, in posted envelope, in which he thanks Moy for an Ex Libris monogram by K.E. Fossberg, saying "I have done nothing to deserve such great kindness." Also laid in, also in posted envelope to Moy, is Toots' business card, with the inscription "We meet July 1988 - Villu", as well as a beautiful folded Christmas 1990 greeting, in green and red calligraphic design by Toots, also signed. Presumably, the business card was misplaced to the newer envelope from the older, but are left as-is. Toots in so admired in his specialty that, among other honors, he has had several new typefaces named for him - not to mention the posh Harrogate, England restaurant of the same name. An enchanting collection, in a handsome, near fine binding, of works from the most productive decades of the great calligrapher's life. LG6. Signed, Inscribed, Dated By Au. Seller Inventory # 000685
