About this Item: [Max Harzof, New York]. 1888 [i.e. c 1924], 1888. Pirated edition. Royal octavo. 87 pages. Unlettered cloth-backed boards. Originally published as a result of an attack by the National Vigilance Association for obscene libels on Vizetelly's English translations of Zola. The authors from whose works these extracts are chosen include Shakespeare, Beaumont and Fletcher, Massinger, Dryden, Congreve, Otway, Vanbrugh, Defoe etc. The Introduction comprises quotations from various authors, including Henry James, on the subject of literary censorship. With regard to the Henry James extract, Leon Edel and Dan H. Laurence write, under item B1b in their Bibliography, 'A portion of the material quoted in these editions of Nana was reprinted by Vizetelly in a pamphlet, issued as a protest against the legal suppression of Zola's work which was being attempted in England. It was described by Arthur Waugh, in his ''London Letter,'' the Critic, 14 October 1893, as ''a curiosity of bibliography, and one which, I fancy, is catalogued in very few libraries.'' According to Thomas Seccombe in the Dictionary of National Biography, only twelve copies were printed.'Laid in is the four-page leaflet containing the text of a letter from Vizetelly to Sir A.K. Stephenson, K.C.B., found in most copies.William E. Colborn first identified this pirated edition as the work of a New York bookseller, Max Harzof, in the early 1920s (''The Vizetelly Extracts'': Princeton University Library Chronicle, Volume XXIII, Number 2, Winter 1962):''.two conclusions appear justified. First, the number of genuine copies of Vizetelly's Extracts issued is greater than heretofore supposed. Despite Seccombe's estimate that the total was twelve, at least nineteen copies are still in existence and their locations known. More surprising is the even greater scarcity of the Harzof reprint. The census that located nineteen copies of the original found only five copies of the pirated edition. Doubtless more remain to be discovered.'' Leaflet: rubbed and creased at the edges. Book: edges slightly rubbed; very good indeed. Seller Inventory # ZOLAEMIL024307
