Des öfteren hatte ich mir einen Band gewünscht, der sowohl die wesentlichen Züge der betreffenden Sprachen darstellte als auch einen kurzen Abriß ihrer äußeren Geschichte enthielte. Kurz gesagt, ich vermißte eine einführende, allgemeinere Darstellung des Themas. Dieses Buch möchte diese Aufgabe übernehmen, wobei es meine Absicht war, jede bekannte lebende oder tote indogermanische Sprache einzuschließen, um auf diese Weise einen Band vorzulegen, der gleichsam als eine Art Nachschlagewerk dienen könnte. - Aus dem Text: Das Indogermanische. Die Bezeichnung 'indogermanische Sprachen' erklärt sich aus dem gemeinsamen Ursprung dieser Sprachen im Ur- oder Protoindogermanischen, einer schriftlosen Sprache, die vermutlich als eine Gruppe eng miteinander verwandter Dialekte bis zum 3. Jahrtausend v. Chr. ohne Unterbrechung gesprochen wurde. Vor allem auf Grund der Wanderungen ihrer Sprecher entwickelten sich diese Dialekte sehr unterschiedlich, und es bildeten sich im Laufe der Zeit voneinander getrennte Einzelsprachen heraus. Schließlich wurden die Abweichungen so groß, daß die ursprüngliche Verwandtschaft der betreffenden Sprachen nicht mehr ohne weiteres sichtbar war. Die mögliche Existenz einer solchen Sprachfamilie wurde 1786 zum ersten Male in Betracht gezogen, jedoch erst im nächsten Jahrhundert wurde diese Vermutung durch die Entdeckungen der neuen historisch-vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft eindeutig bestätigt. Damals wurde der Begriff 'indogermanisch' (so im Deutschen; 'indoeuropäisch' dagegen in den anderen Sprachen (Frz., Engi., Ital., Russ, usw.)) geprägt im Hinblick auf die geographische Lage dieser Sprachen von Indien bis Germanien. Später jedoch erkannte man, daß die indogermanische Sprache von Westen nach Indien eingedrungen war, so daß heute Europa, insbesondere Zentral- und Osteuropa, als die früheste uns bekannte Heimat dieser Sprachfamilie gilt. - Wikipeia: William Burley Lockwood (* 13.
