Originally from Ben Avon [near Pittsburgh, PA], Margaret McElderry (1912-2011) attended the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh School before moving to New York in the 1930s to work for the New York Public Library in the Children's Division under Anne Carroll Moore. After World War II, she became an editor of children's books at Harcourt Brace, eventually establishing her own imprint at Simon and Schuster. Miss McElderry was the first children's editor whose books won both the prestigious Newbery and Caldecott medals in the same year (1952). About this Item: Random House. Condition: Acceptable. Condition: Poor to Fair; First American edition, no DJ. Pastedown on spine is tanned and torn. Poor condition-- the spine is square and holding, if not tight, but the boards are extensively worn and tanned. Rubbing and chipping to extremities of spine-- rather worn at corners and at edges, and worn in some spots to the board. Some small stains and general soil to front and back.
