Black and white illustrated frontispiece, being an etching of Cornish tin mines below the sea. The text is illustrated with black-and-white edges. Blue coloured cloth covered boards with coloured illustrations and silver coloured embossed titles to the front panel and back strip. A book on mining in the late 19th century, including as its first chapter the dangers of mining. The book is in quite ordinary shape  please see photograph. Rubbing, fraying and softening of the back strip edges and there is bumping, rubbing and fraying of the book corners. The underlying board is visible to a small or large degree at the corners. Rubbing of the other book edges and there is quite significant rubbing of the book panels (especially of the coloration of the front cover illustration). The decoration, titles and anything else that was on the back strip is very faint. Tanning and foxing of the text block edges and pages with a stain to the lower text edge, closest to the back strip, that runs the full width of the text block. New and cheaper edition. Publisher's original red cloth with titles in black and pictorial onlay to the upper board, titles and illustration in gilt to the spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece and eight black and white plates by Jules Ferat. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities, a small nick at the head of the spine and the cloth with a few light marks. The contents, with a bookplate to the front endpaper, are toned to the early front and rear pages, lightly foxed throughout and to the text block edge, when closed. An attractice example. The second volume in The Mysterious Island trilogy following 'Dropped from the Clouds' and preceding 'The Secret of the Island'. The first English edition was originally published in 1875.
