About this Item: Engineering Magazine; Offices for Advertisements and Publications 1910, London 1910, 1910. Half-Leather. Condition: Excellent. 910 pages, with a 48 page Index at front. Extensive documentation in photos and schematics of the building of the "Olympic Class" liners at Harland & Wolff at Belfast. This documentation describes the construction of both Olympic & Titanic. ["Engineering" did not do separate construction articles for Titanic as the descriptions here sufficed for both ships.] The coverage begins in the October 21st issue, to coincide with the occasion of the Olympic's launch. This issue has text, accompanied by 28 photos of the ship in progressive stages of construction, which includes photos of the component parts of the ship before installation. These photos are : Bow view of Olympic in the slip [Titanic can be seen next to her], Stern section of Olympic on the slip, 3 photos of the ship's framing, the Rudder Head in the lathe, Olympic and Titanic in general view of berths, view of her high level staging; separate photos of: her rudder, boilers, turbine rotor [two photos], turbine casing [two photos], after-end of the starboard engine, her keel, stern castings and rudder, bow cradle, releasing gear [for her launch], thrust-shaft for one of the reciprocating engines, crankshaft for one of the reciprocating engines, intermediate cylinder for the port engine, pattern for the turbine casing, turbine driven propeller, and steering quadrant. This article is continued in the Nov. 4 issue, which contains, along with the accompanying text, 2 double-page schematics showing the "Plan showing general arrangement of machinery" and the second double page drawing entitled, "The White Star Liner 'Olympic;' Longitudinal Section showing Reciprocating and Turbine Machinery." These double page schematics measure 13 1/2" X 19" and are quite impressive. The article is then continued in the Nov. 18th issue, where 2 double page technical drawings also accompany the text. One is entitled, "The White Star Liner 'Olympic;' Cross-sections through Machinery Compartments" and the other entitled, "General Arrangement of Boilers." [This is a view of the entire ship in frontal section.] There are also three other full page illustrations of the 1) boilers, the 2) "electric-light Installation." and 3) "The Steering-Gear of the White Star Liner "Olympic." Also, in the July 1 issue is a two page article entitled, "The Welin Quadrant Davit for Double-Banked Boats" accompanied by two technical drawings. The article discusses, among other topics, the British Board of Trade's regulations concerning lifeboats, and further states, "A more extensive application of the new system is being made on the White Star Liners Titanic and Olympic, now in course of construction at the yards of Messrs. Harland and Wolff in Belfast." Book in excellent condition, and bound tightly. Gilt decorated leather spine with title in gilt. Postage will be more due to weight.
