Condition: Very good. Robert Gibbings (illustrator). Second Edition. 5 x 3 5/8 in (125 x 90 mm); 23 pp.; title page printed in gold, the rest black in 110t Caslon's Old Face Type. 4 wood-engravings by ROBERT GIBBINGS. Red cloth binding, black title on spine, without its dust-jacket. Copy clean with very faint spots on the enpapers. [Pertelote 115]. Translated by Hannah Waller and with a note on Pushkin and the tale by Raïssa Lomonossova, "This diverting little book had considerable success and the translation was hailed as one of the best renderings of Pushkin ever made." (Pertelote 115) The title in gold adopted a process where the page was printed in colored ink, then dusted over with powdered gold, which adheres to the ink. A limited edition of 100 copies was bound in gold cloth and sold for 1 Guinea, but collectors did not hesitate over the high price, for such a tiny book. The GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS was founded by Harold Midgely Taylor in 1920 with the object of publishing new works of literary significance by young authors and to print and publish fine editions of books of established worth. When Mr. Taylor retired in1924 it was purchased by Robert Gibbins, known as an illustrator and woodcutter (Tomkinson, p .93) "Golden Cockerel books are amongst the most popular and desirable private press items." (Ransom p. 106).

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Richard Waller - after Sebastien Leclerc (illustrator). 1st Edition. A very good copy of this important work on comparative anatomy with engraved title; rubricated title and 30 plates. The original publication had 2 separate parts, both complete in themselves - the second section 'The Measure of the Earth' translated by Richard Waller, is not present. Alexander Pitfeild undertook to translate this work, originally led by Charles Perrault for the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris. Animals, mostly from the royal menageries at Vincennes and Versailles, were supplied to the Royal Academy, for detailed study and dissection. The first publication including 13 species, appeared in 1671 with a second volume 5 years later. The publications had very short print runs and were very expensive being elephant folio with detailed art work mainly by Sebastien Leclerc. There was a growing desire to learn about natural history and the nature of animals and copies of Perrault's work were almost impossible to obtain. Pitfeild's translation was much needed and it became the only work published on comparative anatomy in England between 1660 and 1700. Richard Waller undertook the illustrations, copying Leclerc but reducing the size, taking care to keep the drawings in proportion. The second part, missing here, was undertaken not because it was linked in any way, but because it was important and of interest to the Royal Society. Copies of Pitfeild's translation are extremely scarce. This copy is in a new binding with cloth spine with title label and paper-covered boards. Contents: engraved title page; rubricated title page; permission for printing by the Royal Society (with 2 ink reference numbers at the top); dedication; To The Reader 2pp; preface 9pp; text pp 1- 267 with 30 plates (p 1 with small stamp to bottom margin; a few light ink spots to bottom side margins pp 48 & 49; small repaired edge tear bottom p141; alphabetical table of animal names with errata 2pp; index of anatomical matters 11pp; finis. Contents in very good clean condition. There is some staining which is mostly to the top outer page corners and varies in intensity. Occasional light marking elsewhere. Please enquire if you would like to see more images.

Full-Leather. Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. 73 of the 75 volumes of this set. This is a new edition dating from 1790. This set was originally published in 1779. All are in good to very good condition with rubbing to the spine and around the edges and some light marking and edge wear to the front and rear panels. Each volume has gilt decorations and three title panels on the spine: At the top this is burgundy and has 'Johnson's Poets' on it and this is present and more or less complete on 54 volumes; in the centre it is black and has the names of the poets in the volume on it and this is present on 38 volumes; and at the bottom there should be a small black panel with the volume number - this has proved the most fragile and is now only present on 3 volumes. There is a little browning to the page edges. Each volume has the original owner's bookplate - this was Alfred Octavius Hartley, M.A. of Steeple Ashton Vicarage in Wells in Norfolk. There is a little browning to the endpapers. The pages are also slightly browned with marks and stains to a few volumes but they are generally free from any spotting. The set deals with the life and work of 66 poets. Volumes 1-6 contain the lives of the poets and the final two volumes contain a general index. The remaining volumes contain the works of the poets. Some volumes contain the works of more than one poet while for the major poets several volumes are devoted to their work. Because this is a set of 73 volumes there will be an additional postage charge so if this is a concern please make contact before ordering so the different options can be discussed.
