Provenance: ex libris Beverly Chew: "The influence of such men as Robert Hoe, William L. Andrews, Theodore DeVinne, S. P. Avery, Charles B. Foote, E. H. Holden and Beverly Chew on the collecting world has been great, and their constant stand for all that is best in book-building has helped to mould American standards in such matters." - Introduction to the 1924 auction catalogue of Chews' library. This frontispiece was drawn by Clarkson Stanfield R.A., and engraved by Edwin Davis French from the original which was owned by Dickens. Dickens sailed in "Britannia" for his first visit to North America. The top cover features, in gilt, a facsimile of a portion of the holograph of Dickens' letter.
