Weigel 1729/1729/1712, 1729. 3 works in 3 bindings, (engraved frontispiece, 19) 144, (1) 145-302 (2) 134, (12) 164 (2) 66 folia., Luyken: 60 (of 62) folia., Weigel: (frontispiece) 151, (frontispiece) 108 folia. Contemporary gold-stamped Leather with 7 raised bands, richly decorated with gilt, gilt-edged and gauffred text blocks, bound by the Second Stadholder's Bindery in The Hague, Folio H. 44,5 x L. 28 x W. 7-8,5 cm. (The spines are very slightly faded and the spine-ends are skillfully restored, small restorations in the margins at some places, the work of Luyken lacks engraving 35 and 62. Very beautiful copy of the Dutch States Translation of the Bible, containing the Old and New Testament followed by the Apocrypha. Interleaved with the 6 double full-page maps by Pieter and Jacob Keur, 60 double full-page engravings by Jan Luyken from his Icones Biblicae and the entire work of Christoph Weigel named Historiae Celebriores, containing 2 frontispieces and 257 engravings. The entire work is bound by the Second Stadholder's Bindery in three very beautiful, gold-stamped bindings. The Second Stadholder's Bindery was active in the year 1752-1782 in the city The Hague. The bindery is so called because it made many bindings for members of the Stadholder's family, they owned special stamps for this purpose, among which the crowns on this set. Typical for the bindings is the richly decorated pattern with gold tooling, the stamps can be traced back to the bindery with the help of the standard work of Storm van Leeuwen. The gilding used on the bindings is very diverse, on each of the boards 8 crowns are displayed surrounded with a vivid pattern of mostly flowers and leaves. The spines are decorated with floral gilding between and on the raised bands, leaving some space for the title and volume indication. The text blocks are gilt-edged and near the edges gauffred with a design of leaves.)3 werken in 3 banden, (gegraveerde titelpagina, 19) 144, (1) 145-302 (2) 134, (12) 164 (2) 66 folia., Luyken: 60 (van 62) folia., Weigel: (titelprent) 151, (titelprent) 108 folia. About this Item: Nuremberg, Hans Weigel, 1577]., 1577. Folio (204 x 325 mm). 161 (instead of 220) hand-numbered woodcut plates in early 18th-century colour, mounted on backing paper and missing parts supplemented by hand. Later half calf with 18th-c. spine label. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of Jost Amman's encyclopedic book of costumes. A strongly fragmented copy, as usual; in the early 19th century, the plates were mounted on backing paper by the owner, the trained landscape painter Jakob Linckh (1786-1841) from Stuttgart (cf. Thieme/B. 23, 254), who also coloured the volume throughout and supplemented all missing parts of the images and even of the text by hand. Linckh, who had studied in Rome, visited Greece in 1810. There he met Byron, who commissioned him to provide the illustrations for Hobhouse's travel book. - Wants 59 plates altogether; the remainder are trimmed closely at the upper edge, and most have severe defects in the lower half. Although the present collection begins with the plate showing the Emperor, as originally issued, the remaining woodcuts follow no apparent order. 20 plates show costumes of Turkey, Arabia, Persia, Egypt, and Ethiopia; others depict Greeks, Russians, and Englishmen. 28 plates show the costumes of today's Italy; German cities are well represented, as are France and Spain, Bohemia and Hungary. Also includes the famous picture of the Brazilian Tupinamba Indians: a man with a crown and belt of feathers, a knife, and a bow and arrow, beside a long-haired woman carrying a baby in a knotted sling. The illustration is an adaptation of two cuts from the "Recueil de la diversité des habits" (Paris, 1562; Antwerp, 1572) by Francois Descerpz, "one of the first likenesses of the Brazilian Indian" (Borba de Moraes). - Title page shows Jakob Linckh's autograph ownership (dated 1825); somewhat later stamped ownership of Anton Franzin (possibly the like-named Tyrolean law clerk, c. 1840) to flyleaf. VD 16, W 1487 (BSB copy incomplete). Lipperheide 7-8 (both copies incomplete). Andresen I, 234. Becker 140. Borba de Moraes II, 373f. Maggs, Bibl. Americana 1-214 ("This book is excessively rare in a complete state"). Seller Inventory # 28741

About this Item: Newenstatt Knuber, 1616. (15,5 x 10 cm). 60 Bll. - VD17 12:105166W. About this Item: Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Nuremberg: (circa 1690-1700). 4to (240 x 195mm). 101 leaves. Engraved title-page and 100 numbered copperplate engraved emblems by father and son engravers Jan and Caspar Luyken (or Luiken). Each emblem is printed on rectos and accompanied by a ten-line Latin verse in letterpress. Original blue paper wrappers, edges uncut; (edges lightly browned and some light marginal foxing, spine chipped with loss, but overall still very good). Ex Libris of William S. Heckscher (bookplate to front pastedown). First edition of Christoph Weigel’s Ethica naturalis; his summation of biblical ethics in moralistic prints and etchings. Christoph Weigel (the Elder) was a German engraver, art dealer and publisher. He was known to collaborate with the father and son engravers from Nurembeg, Luyken, to create masterfully engraved books. An engraver himself, Weigel is perhaps best known for his work in atlases, world geography, and universal histories. In this moralistic work, the Luyken team created striking designs of natural elements, animals, and aspects of the human condition to emphasize proverbial messages. This work sought to capture the social organization of mankind through expert engravings; they are classic examples of quality German Baroque printmaking. This copy belonged to prominent twentieth century German art historian William S. Heckscher (1904-1999), who wrote on emblem books and published the major work Reallexicon zu deutschen Kunstgeschichte, where he classified Weigel’s book as one of the encyclopedic works to follow in the footsteps of Andrea Alciato. Notably, it was Hecksher’s claim that Jan Luyken was one of the best emblem artists of all time. Very rarely complete in this original condition. Landwehr, German 639; Praz p. 533.
