Paperback. Condition: New. This book was undertaken at a pivotal time in the region. The weak summer monsoon in 2009 created drought conditions throughout Pakistan. This followed an already tenuous situation for many rural households faced with high fuel and fertilizer costs and the impacts of rising global food prices. Then catastrophic monsoon flooding in 2010 affected over 20 million people, devastating their housing, infrastructure, and crops. Damages from this single flood event were estimated at US$10 billion, half of which were losses in the agriculture sector. Notwithstanding the debate as to whether these observed extremes are evidence of climate change, an investigation is needed regarding the extent to which the country is resilient to these shocks. It is thus timely, if not critical, to focus on climate risks for water, agriculture, and food security in the Indus Basin in Pakistan. This study uses several different modelling environments including hydrologic models, an agro-economic optimisation model of the irrigation system, and a computable general equilibrium model of the Pakistan economy. The models used here are among the best mathematical representations available of the physical and economic responses to these exogenous future climate risks. The integrated systems framework used in this analysis provides a broad and unique approach to estimating the hydrologic and crop impacts of climate change risks, the macro-economic and household-level responses and an effective method for assessing a variety of adaptation investments and policies. A better understanding of how these sectors are linked will help plan future investments in these sectors. Further collection and analysis of critical input and output observations (e.g. snow and ice data) as well as practical measures for improving productivity under a changing climate will enhance this integrated framework methodology and future climate impact assessments. Continued refinements to the assessment approach developed in this volume will further help to sharpen critical policies and interventions by the Pakistan government.

Paperback. SIGNED. First edition. Near Fine paperback with light shelf wear and a tiny abrasion to the fore edge. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. The Fall 1989 issue of Asian Art (Vol. II, No. 4), the quarterly journal published by the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian. This issue is devoted almost entirely to Raghubir Singh, with: an essay and a 26-page portfolio of work by Singh; an essay about the photographer by Max Kozloff who also conducted a separate interview with Singh; the only non-Singh related article is by James Wescoat about life in a Mughal garden. SIGNED BY KOZLOFF on the table of contents page; no inscription. Perfect-bound, stiff wraps; 79 pages; color plates throughout + maps; 8.5 x 11 inches. Singh (19421999) was a self-taught Indian photographer, best known for his documentary-style, small-format street photography of the people of India. He was influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson, whom he met in 1966, and Robert Frank, but unlike them, he chose to work in color--color being intrinsic to Indian aesthetics.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Successful water management is crucial for the proper operation of natural environmental systems and for the support of human society. These two aspects are interdependent, but decisions about one are often made without regard to effects upon the other. A persistent challenge is to consider them together. This book is the first to fully analyze the relationship between water management, environmental conditions and public policy. It combines a careful review of the character and evolution of water management and evaluates management from the standpoint of the quality of the natural environment. Topics covered include domestic and industrial water supply and waste disposal, groundwater use, river channel and floodplain management, and integrated river basins. The processes of social decision-making are examined against a backdrop of plant-soil-water-ecosystem relationships and ecosystem change. Examples are drawn from around the world, from local watershed management to international river basin planning, with emphasis on integrative approaches.
