Hier wurden Campegius Vitringa der Ältere, Ruardus Andala (16651727) und Albert Schultens (16861750) seine prägenden Lehrer. Nach absolvierter Ausbildung hatte er eine Hofmeisterstelle inne und wurde unter die Kandidaten des Predigtamts in Seeland aufgenommen. 1718 ging er als Konrektor an das Gymnasium in Middelburg und 1720 übernahm er das Rektorat der Schule in Deventer. When later under financial hardship, he executed one of his most significant literary schemes in the hopes of generating income; a series of ambitious articles on Roman history written during 1823-7 for the Encyclopaedia metropolitana that were later reprinted in two volumes with a life of Trajan in 1845.
