About this Item: January 1888., 1888. Condition: Good. January 1888. 1888. Good. - A card, 3-1/2 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide, signed in black ink "Very sincerely yours / Ada Dyas / Jany 1888". The top edge of the card is creased. There is a glue stain to each corner of the verso with rubbing to the top corners where the card has been removed from an album. Good. Irish actress Ada Dyas [1843-1908] made her London debut in 1861 playing Prince John of Lancaster in "Henry IV'. She became famous in the highly successful 1871 production of Wilkie Collins' adaptation of his "Woman in White", playing the roles of Laura Fairlie and Anne Caherick. Her first American appearance was for Augustin Daly in 1872 in "Man and Wife", based on the Wilkie Collins novel. She later joined the James W. and Lester Wallack company where her most successful role was as Claire Ffolliott in Boucicault's "The Shaughraun" [a performance mentioned in Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence"]. Personal copy of Wilkie Collins, with his ownership inscription and dated January 1867 to the half-title. Finely bound in full dark blue crushed morocco by Stikeman & Co., with five raised bands to the spine, decorated, lettered and ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, maroon marbled endpapers. Near fine, with the front hinge neatly repaired, bright and clean interior. A clean and handsomely bound copy with excellent provenance. This first edition of Lyra Elegantiarum includes poems by Walter Savage Landor, which were printed in this edition without the author's permission. Accordingly, it was quickly suppressed, and a revised issue was published in the same year omitting these verses. Lyra Elegantiarum is a collection of social and occasional poetry written by many of the most notable authors. Specifically, it including Charles Lamb, John Keats, William Makepeace Thackeray, William Cowper, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Lord Byron, among others. Signed.
