No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Foerster, Willi (illustrator). 1st Edition. Five original woodcut prints by Willi Foerster (German, 1892-1965). From the artist's Rothenburg series, being architectural images from the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Undated but probably circa 1930s. Printed in black ink on transparent tissue sheets. Plate sizes range from 6.12 x 4.12 to 9.5 x 6.5 inches. Each print titled in pencil at lower left: Klingentorturm (defensive tower); Plönlein (area featuring old, timber-frame houses); Rödertor (historic gate); Portal (doorway of the old Town Hall or Rathaus); and Stiller Winkel (quiet residential corner). Each print hand signed by Foerster in pencil at lower right, plus Holzschnitt (woodcut) and Handdruck (hand-printed). Overall (with off-white mats): 14 x 11 inches. Immensely clean and virtually unwrinkled prints tipped on to very clean vellum Alphamat 8559 mat boards of 4-ply thickness, and framed by same. All plates protected by archival transparent poly sheeting. The prints are ready for framing. All five woodcuts rated Near Fine. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a town in the district of Ansbach of Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia), the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. Heavily damaged by an Allied bombing raid in 1945, Rothenburg was restored and is renowned for its well-preserved medieval old town, a destination for tourists from around the world. Today it is one of only three towns in Germany that still have completely intact city walls, the other two being Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl, both also in Bavaria. According to DesignClassics24, "Coming from modest circumstances, Forester was pupil of Otto Ludwig Naegele, Munich (1908 - 1910). Since 1919, he had his own studio in the Plönlein, etchings and woodcuts, at times own print workshop, later on also water colors and oil paintings. Beside numerous other engagements, Forester was a co-founder of the Rothenburger artist's alliance in 1923 (beside Philippi, W. Shaft and others).".
